I think it would really help more Americans understand the gravity of what has been going on if media stopped using phrases like “reverse the results of the election” which is not a thing, or “overturn the election”, (also not a thing), and started using the language the rest of the world uses: attempted coup.

It’s not “reversing” or “overturning” an election; it’s ignoring the results of an election and installing a dictator through fraud, threats, and violence, ending democracy.

@fsinn Hitler actually went to jail after his coup attempt, Trump is unlikely to.
@SocialistStan I think he will, but I have been wrong before so… fingers crossed.
@fsinn I love your statement. Media is always either click batting or attempting to normalize corrupt behavior.

@TQdemocrat I get that they can’t make accusatory statements, but it appears the language is different when that same media is talking about “what appears to be an attempted-coup by armed insurrectionists storming the seat of government, trapping hundreds of the nation’s highest political officials all in the same building, while ordering the national guard to stand down, ostensibly because the former president lost an election, though really part of a much bigger special operation.”

I mean…

@fsinn

You are absolutely right. "the rest of the world..."
Yes, the proliferation of #Orwellian #NewSpeak terminology shows how far down the #fascist rabbit hole the #US already are.
In fact, knowing that 1 way 2 measure inflation is 2 count certain words in the publications deemed relevant.
I'm quite positive, defining such terms +having them counted and put into graphs monthly would yield interesting results.

Of course, regional, ownership, and location need to B accounted 4.

@fsinn Every....word...of....this.
@fsinn it's corporate America protecting their status quo. Now that the media is just another capitalist assembly line we need to teach our voters to look elsewhere for truth and balance. It's grim out there.
@fsinn when you put it that way, it’s kind of funny that US foreign policy came home to bite it in the ass (again).

@fsinn

Words >do< matter.

They create the world in which we live. So we better be careful about the world we are creating.

@fsinn Say it louder for the fools in the back!! 🔊
@SAWYNNE1. Seriously. Over and over and louder and louder until they do better.

This. 💯

Every style guide that I have ever used says to speak simply and clearly.

There’s a reason that Our Failed Political Press ™ cannot call a lie or a liar, and it has nothing to do with balance; BUT it has everything to do with cowardice.

@Tengrain Exactly. I mean, I suppose the alternative is that they simply do not understand, which, when the purpose of the entire industry is to inform the public, is not any less horrifying.
@fsinn I keep using the most basic of measurements: if this exact thing happened Somewhere Else, what would you call it? Yeah. So call it that here too.
@fsinn human law is imperfect...the law of karma never fails...
@fsinn
Yep, language matters. The way the conversation is framed has huge implications on how the audience perceives the meaning of the conversation. I like this language:
It was a failed coup.
Trump attempted a coup and failed.
Trump wanted to be dictator.
I was a juror and was surprised at how poorly both attorneys told their stories - the language didn’t reach me….
@fsinn They do it because we let them. We’ve been letting them do it for over 40 years. They have no incentive to stop. We seem to get the media we deserve, and as a result of it, the government we deserve. The most outspoken advocate in the world is Greta Thunberg. We can’t even muster a bad imitation of her here. We’re all complicit.
@shoq We’re fighting the same fight in Canada too. It’s maddening.
@fsinn we need to use the same language here in #canada for the politicians that voted to support the #convoy they should be held responsible for supporting a planned coup. Let’s make sure we vote out the #CPC #MP that vote in support of the convoy.
@Bwacton Yes. I had some long threads on this on the bird site. It was terrorism (and not just domestic terrorism) and we need to demand that it be called out accurately.
@fsinn it’s what the right call “stealing the election”, election fraud, voter fraud, and ignoring and stifling the law. Party of law and order, my ass. Bunch of whiny hypocrites!!
@fsinn
Like the US has done on countless occasions around the world. Oh I guess that wouldn't help them understand either.
@fsinn
And do we HAVE to keep referring to him as "former President Trump"? Do we have to pay him this "homage". He's just Donald Trump.
