I've decided to shift my social media focus to Mastodon, and so this is my #introduction.
I lead Microsoft Research and new product/business incubations that emerge from our research projects.

I'm pleased to be here and am looking forward to this fresh start with all of you.

@peteratmsr Welcome Peter! Your job sounds very interesting
@peteratmsr
Welcome. This is Shobana’s husband

@peteratmsr Hello Peter. Welcome to Mastodon!
Can you tell me anything about this MS Research project and wether it will see the light of the day? I'm very much interested in using it

Magpie - Microsoft Research

Python has become overwhelmingly popular for ad-hoc data analysis, and Pandas dataframes have quickly become the de facto standard API for data science. However, performance and scaling to large datasets remain significant challenges. This is in stark contrast with the world of databases, where decades of investments have led to both sub-millisecond latencies for small […]

@peteratmsr @jeff welcome on board, Peter! I think you’ll find it’s actually quite a friendly place. I hope you have a good time.

@peteratmsr

Welcome to the Fediverse!

When is Microsoft Research migrating their account here?

@peteratmsr Is there a definitive list of projects available to review please? I work in the food poverty sector and would love to see what new technology is available to support the collection and re-distribution of surplus food. Many thanks.
@peteratmsr Welcome! Looking forward to reading your insights here.

@peteratmsr
Welcome to the light side. Things are different here, without AI and automated feed curation, it is very much what you make of it. I would suggest following and unfollowing profusely to find those things which interest you.

You can also follow hashtags, and on the desktop give them their own column. You might wish to edit your introduction post and hashtag the keywords: Mastodon search only works on tags as free word search would overload instance server db's. Now there's an interesting research project for you!

Best wishes finding your feet.

@peteratmsr Welcome!
User of Surface Laptop for years here ! And I love it.

@peteratmsr Consider the strong possibility of a scenario in which Musk and/or Twitter declares bankruptcy and the site is auctioned off. In that scenario, there are only three bidders who could plausibly pick up the pieces: Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

There are others with the technical means but it is unlikely to be a good fit. I doubt the site is worth $5 billion at this point and it is likely to end up selling for a tenth of that. See what happened to GeoCities after Rupert Murdoch.

I think there is plausibly some value there, but it would be in turning Twitter into a Mastodon/Fediverse site like AOL and Compuserve ended up becoming Internet service providers.

The Fediverse will have end to end secure communications very soon. There are multiple teams working on it. I have been developing a PKI that can move private keys across devices for six years now and had an alpha release earlier this year. WebRTC does all the heavy lifting for Teams, Zoom, WebEx, etc. etc. All we lack to bring it to the Fediverse is presence.

@peteratmsr Welcome! After having read about the founder, I have the feeling Mastodon is here to stay.

@peteratmsr

Welcome! Movetodon.org is super helpful in my experience.

Looking forward the hearing about innovation.
