Seeing signs of this already with the rise of TikTok: “By the end of 2023, Twitter no longer sets the daily news agenda by default for the entire US press. This will come as an enormous relief to many publishers, who have long wished their reporters wouldn’t spend so much time tweeting anyway" ~ @caseynewton

13 predictions for platforms in 2023

Twitter! ChatGPT! Content moderation! And more

Platformer
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton I just picture you know who sitting back and saying, “See? Disruption!”

@taylorlorenz “2023 prediction: Elon Musk is gonna testify before the new Republican House Majority in a splashy hearing about online woke mind virus cancel culture and then immediately and obviously comically perjure himself."

I'll make sure to stock up on popcorn for this.

@rocketcheddar @taylorlorenz Let them, let them define woke and have real public discourse. People are not idiots. Republicans know this, their intention is to make the people docile.
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Can certainly see this happening. I do wonder where and what platform will generate instantaneous news?
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton I'm old enough to remember when publishers "encouraged" their reporters to engage on Twitter!

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton

The publishers' relief may be short-lived as the reporters start propping their phones on any avaliable surface and doing the latest tiktok dances.

@taylorlorenz off topic, but I saw your earlier toot and can confirm you are the only account I follow that doesn't have link previews, including from other mastodon.social accounts.
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Praying that prediction about the movies comes true. Studios are putting out some great flicks this fall and the upcoming year looks promising as heck.
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Now reporters will spend their days tooting 😄
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton
I think news reporting is inherently compromised when commercial social media companies use algorithms to target an audience(s), and also use algorithms direct individual users to news. I'm new to Mastodon, but it makes sense, reporting in public domain, period.

@taylorlorenz Yes they won't be tweeting.. they will be #Tooting.

Yes I giggled like a maniac at that. 😆

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Twitter is toxic, if you step away from it long enough you'll see. But it does serve some kind of function and for some people more than others. People are waking up. This is what the stories should be focused on but not so blatant that it catches the ire of Republicans. It has to be hush hush. The next age should be 'personal growth', but possibly not spiritual.
@taylorlorenz I'm surprised it hasn't shifted more to Instagram even before the recent changes. Maybe that's limited because it doesn't do links in posts.

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton

Twitter was for me, like a daily visit to the world's largest library, filled with the best access to news and valid, reliable information.

It's my hope that publishers understand that reporters being available to make quick clarifications, get news tips, answer questions politely asked, is good journalism and PR.

Also hope they'll recognize the long term positive impact of just one person learning.

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton terrific read- thanks for raising it up, Taylor!
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton I feel like we're already there (that's my perspective as someone who tweets, but is not a journalist)

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton

Should not news outlets (or anyone, really) drive toward decentralize/federated engagements such that a mastodon instance might provide? Yes, a culture shift, but really anyone who has a website should act to control their online presence in general, individually and as groups/orgs/corps… IMHO.

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton of course news organizations would prefer journalists didn’t spend time giving out information that they don’t have editorial control over, that’s a given. I doubt it’s in the public’s best interest
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton Does one suspect that the eagerness of Congress to restrict TikTok was ginned up by Twitter and Facebook?
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton This is a golden age for agenda setting research, now to figure out the twitter API weakened our skills to the point that we can't do the research.
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton
I imagine that live real time video will be essential for what ever platform wants to corner breaking news.
@taylorlorenz @caseynewton
I find it hard to believe that TikTok would be a good long-term strategy as long as it still has owners in Mainland China. The PRC is a huge weight over the head of that platform.

@taylorlorenz @caseynewton
I'll be surprised if Twitter is even functioning this time next year.

They've lost millions of hours of institutional memory in their software development organization. All it will take is one big crack attack and it's gone. If it withstands crack attempts, it will slowly rot until its H-1B visa hostages are no longer able to fix things.
