Dmitry Kokh from Russia has been named the Nature Photographer of the Year 2022. His winning photograph "House of Bears" was taken at an abandoned Weather Station on Kolyuchin, an island off the coast of Russia.
@MicheleV_AK love this image, thank you for sharing πŸ€—
@MicheleV_AK Neighbor: Hey neighbor, do you got any sugar?
Bear: "Nom, Nom, Nom. No"
The neighbor is no more.
@MicheleV_AK Really cool. Thank you for pointing me to this.
@MicheleV_AK Wow. Goldilocks sure did a number on the place, didn’t she?
@MicheleV_AK I think you mean Svalbard. #HisDarkMaterials
@stewf Good one! I love that show. Is it coming back on for another season??
@MicheleV_AK Currently halfway thru season 3 I think. The audiobook is also highly recommended.
@stewf I didn't think I would like it as it is not really my genre, but I am a HUGE Ruth Wilson fan. Now, I'm hooked.
@MicheleV_AK
Obligatory
@JohnMastodon That's hilarious! And to come from THE man himself, too. Thank you, oh great one who created Mastodon! 😁
@MicheleV_AK someone please write a children’s book to go with this perfect cover.
@ljfxiki Wouldn't that be lovely and wonderful??
@MicheleV_AK I'd love to get some back story about how close this location is to the coast, and presumably the lack of ice thereby.
@roadskater It's an abandoned Arctic weather station on a Russian island, Kolyuchin. The photographer was on a ship headed back to Russia when bad weather forced them to head for the island and that's when he discovered the polar bears, about 20 in all. That's as much as I know, but you can check out his website and also see the other polar bear series he took from a Russian ice cutter using a drone near the North Pole on Franz Josef Island. https://www.dmitrykokh.com/polar-bears-and-the-icebreaker

@MicheleV_AK Look, if you're going to F where up they live, they might come for your space. Can you blame them?
@roadskater Are we talking about polar bears? They have never lived where I live in Alaska, at least during my lifetime. Also, I have always said that we are in their space, not the other way around.
@MicheleV_AK That reminds me, Season 3 of #HisDarkMaterials is out now on #BBCiPlayer!
(I love this photo!)
@MicheleV_AK What a stunning photo!

@MicheleV_AK what an image! Stunning and award well deserved for this photographer.
@MicheleV_AK love the photo but they added way too much exposure too the bear on the right. It looks like it’s popping off the screen. Maybe not too much Lightroom edits? 🀷🏻
@frankstallone Well, seeing as he was taking the shots with a drone on an abandoned island that used to house a weather station, I think he did an excellent job. If you want to see the whole series plus the other polar bear photos he did from an icebreaker, check out his website: https://www.dmitrykokh.com/abandoned
