The destruction of a planet may sound like science fiction, but in this cluster of stars at the edge of our galaxy that may be exactly what happened! A white dwarf star likely snatched a planet from its host star & then tore it apart with gravity!
@SpockResists Reminds me of an appropriate story for the holiday season...Arthur C Clarke's, "The Star" https://sites.uni.edu/morgans/astro/course/TheStar.pdf
@SpockResists
Me: If our galaxy is SO dangerous, how has life persisted on Planet Earth for a billion years?
Science: You are unfuckingbelievably lucky.
@ScottAkenhead @SpockResists In space things happen in space time, on earth it happens in geological time. The important thing is both time frames do include now.

@SpockResists honestly, I prefer disasters that don't require planning

and it's so pretty

@SpockResists Well that certainly puts all our problems in perspective.
Right up there with climate change we now also need to be avoiding white dwarf stars.

Given the current state of our squabbling world leaders neither of these objectives is likely to be addressed anytime soon.
Nice image. Can't see the credit anywhere though?

@CountessKatherynBoheme @SpockResists don’t fool yourself that big ball in the sky that keeps us alive can take us out at any minute.

@SpockResists Aye Mr. Spock. Though, that is one of the least of our poor Earth's problems. Even a White Dwarf, or Black Holes, pales besides the ability of Humans to destroy a World, with the stupidity & greed to destroy the World humans need for survival.

A Planetary Challenge on an Unprecedented Scale - Farsight

The Sixth Mass Extinction is underway - and it represents a threat to human societies in more ways than one.

Farsight

@kryten42 @SpockResists Agreed. We're far more likely to destroy ourselves than be taken out by some cosmic event.

Well, unless it's a White Hole. 😉

@Tweetfiction @kryten42 @SpockResists
It’s on us to find a way to avoid self-destruction… though a planetary defense shield might be a good idea.
Imagine if that interstellar wanderer, ‘Oumouamoua, had smacked into us. If we worked together better to detect and deflect it, that would be a good thing, right?
@SpockResists amazing. Makes you feel really small.
