The longer it takes to indict, the more it empowers the authoritarians.
@StevenBeschloss I'm looking at Germany for that one, they didn't play. Why is our system so slow, especially when there is overwhelming proof?
@TheViking Well, the Germans have been down this road before.
@nastynana16 So you mean, they might have a built in system šŸ™ƒšŸ˜‰
@StevenBeschloss You’re gonna make Merrick cry again. 😢
@scenario @StevenBeschloss I have said the same thing many times. Everything that has happened to this point should have happened a year ago.
@Edwardandwillisllc @StevenBeschloss And that is entirely Nancy Pelosi’s fault.
@StevenBeschloss The more people keep saying stuff lie this when they don't understand how criminal investigations work, the more they sound like Trump supporters.

@MIGIRLINVA @StevenBeschloss I get that some charges are complex and very difficult to prove.

That said, it seems to me that somewhere among the dozens of uncharged crimes by Trump and his fascist collaborators, there is at least one that's easy to prove---perhaps one where he confessed on live TV, for example---that could secure us a quick conviction and GET HIM OFF THE STREET. I would then patiently wait for the more complicated crimes to be charged, while Trump sits in prison.

@BlueDot @StevenBeschloss Here's the problem with that theory: 1) DOJ will get ONE shot at Trump, so no, they aren't going to charge the "easy" ones and go back later. 2) From the day he is arrested, it will literally take several years before he goes to trial (I doubt they can even seat a jury). He will not spend a day in prison awaiting trial.

And if he got acquitted on one or two of those "easy" ones, that's the ball game.

@MIGIRLINVA @StevenBeschloss It's not at all obvious that the DOJ only gets one whack. May be true, it's just not obvious.

It's easy enough to find examples of people facing new charges while in prison, so I doubt you're saying there's a legal obstacle. Are you saying there's only the political will to charge Trump once? That seems like a fixable problem.

@BlueDot Well, yes, a NORMAL person can have additional charges, but no, there will likely be one shot at Trump.

I think you sorely misunderstand how long this is going to take or how intertwined these cases are. A cheeseburger stands a better chance of getting Trump first.

@BlueDot And since mnay of these crimes are intertwined, if you charge on the "easy" ones first and he is acquitted, then you can't really use that for the bigger charges and the cases all apart.

It's been less than 2 years. This isn't an episode of Law & Order. Big cases like this go on for YEARS

@MIGIRLINVA @BlueDot @StevenBeschloss

That would certainly embolden him more than he already is.

@MIGIRLINVA @StevenBeschloss if nothing else, the more they push anti-democracy which helps the fascist movement https://terikanefield.com/disillusioned-by-democracy/

@IbuMichele @StevenBeschloss True but people need to realize that 1) this is the largest crimial investigation in history and is unpreecedneted in scope and size, 2) DOJ will get ONE shot at this, and 3) real life does not work like an episode of Law & Order.
@MIGIRLINVA @StevenBeschloss sorry. That’s exactly what I meant and must not have said it well. Rushing the judicial process does not lead us away from fascism.
@StevenBeschloss
I realize we are slow and methodical to make sure it’s done right. But that must be weighed against the danger to our government and way of life.
It’s taking far too long given all the necessary evidence was collected many months ago.
@StevenBeschloss that’s actually not true and quite a stupid remark.
@JJPeterson @StevenBeschloss Ouch. Why the strong negative reaction to this opinion?
@escarpment @StevenBeschloss
Because it’s the opposite of true and it’s a really dumb thing for a journalist to say. It’s meant to generate chaos and get him clicks from people who need instant gratification and don’t understand the gravity of indicting a former president or his appointees.

@JJPeterson @StevenBeschloss Got it. I wonder if it's more of an opinion/preference which is neither true nor false: "I prefer to speed up investigations and not let Trump delay indefinitely."

I hope we all understand the gravity: we might end up with a president to prison pipeline as has been seen, to some degree, in other democracies such as South Korea, Iceland, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. The president has max legal exposure, so there may always be "something" you could investigate.

@JJPeterson @escarpment @StevenBeschloss as he stated today, Not having indicted and prosecuted Nixon left the door open. That is fact and Not fully prosecuting Trump and his co-conspirators including Senators and House Representatives is factually inequality of the rule of law which already abounds in an already injustice system.
@StevenBeschloss I’ve yet seen a special prosecutor do anything but delay and obfuscate. Haven’t ever seen a meaningful prosecution in my 62 years
@StevenBeschloss Seriously! This is so true! Merrick Garland @thejusticedepart better step it up!
@StevenBeschloss True, however, rushing to do it can see them found not guilty on a technicality. My father served 27 years with Victoria Police. Retired as a Detective Chief Inspector. He would take a bit longer at times to chatge to ensure the case was not lost on technicality or to help get enough evifence to charge a few at once.

@StevenBeschloss Very true, this has already taken far too long. #Trump #Jan6Committee
@StevenBeschloss but making it easier to indict people also empowers authoritarians.
