@ryanschultz Thanks for the links, which I'm also adding to my increasingly long post on guides to Mastodon!
@ryanschultz Thanks for sharing this! Both sources go nicely into the finer points of Mastodon culture.
@ryanschultz This is great!! Thanks for posting!! I have lunch time entertainment today!
@ryanschultz Thanks Ryan FYI the Google docs link is not working
@turdusmerula OK, thanks for letting me know. (You might need a Gmail email address to access it.)
@ryanschultz A boosted post is not specifically to appear in people timelines. It will depend on their number of following and followers.
Checking the # Explore section is a good thing to do, and that's where I saw your post - because it was boosted/fav quite well and jumped above - not in my timeline though.

@ryanschultz I would like to shamelessly self-promote my OpenSource guide for mastodon too :)

I'm in particular proud of the "How to move server" and "Using your own domain" which is fully interactive and uses your real server information to provide deep links and information

Mastodon Guide

The MastoGuide goal is to help everyone learn about Mastodon

@ryanschultz Excellent advice! Learned some stuff I didn’t know yet. Thanks for putting it together, Ryan!
@ryanschultz i can also recommend this guide about moving or consolidating accounts: https://nerdschalk.com/how-to-switch-servers-on-mastodon-everything-you-need-to-know/

As Twitter undergoes recent changes, many users have been looking for alternatives. And Mastodon has been at the top of the list for many users. This open-source, decentralized microblogging platfo…

@ryanschultz that's is the most helpful thing I've read all day. That answered all my questions. Time to head over to social I guess
@ryanschultz Are these endorsed by John Mastadon himself?
@ryanschultz GitHub freaks me out, I’m a Luddite having to figure out other programs to figure out other programs reminds me of a dr dues book and a thing about bee watchers
@ryanschultz There's some great advice here - especially appreciated the article by @nikodemus
@ryanschultz I would add this as an excellent primer for why it's better this way

I Was Wrong About Mastodon – EscapingTech

I said that Mastodon moderation wouldn't scale, it does. The cultural differences will likely continue to maintain a friendlier atmosphere regardless of size.

@ryanschultz

Thank you for sharing these excellent resources! I'm sure they will be very helpful to anyone looking to learn more about Mastodon.

@ryanschultz “We've had fifteen years of Twitter, Facebook, and heaven knows how many other social media platforms becoming platforms for Search Engine Optimization, Brand Awareness, and Corporate Synergy, and I'll be blunt: most of us are really, really tired of it.”
This makes me so happy. (From the first link, which I was scared to open, but turned out to be full of useful information.)

@ryanschultz I also made a guide to securely leaving that other site. Too many people are risking someone taking over their old Twitter name and impersonating them by just deactivating their accounts.

@ryanschultz I'm happy this is here.
@joehanks1181 You're welcome! Glad it wass helpful.
@ryanschultz Thanks. Boosted. Favorited. Saved. 🙂
@ryanschultz Does anyone have a compilation of the moderation rules (i.e. free speech rules) of the different instances?
@martinkaste No, you'd have to check each instance separately, as far as I know.
@ryanschultz YAAAAASSSS just what I needed thank you!!
@ryanschultz thank you for this. Much needed assistance for a newbie transplant from Elons Hellscape.

@ryanschultz WE CAN EDIT POSTS HERE?!

How, I must know!

@ryanschultz
Oh, I guess it's just an option now. I must have missed that update 😅
@forte @ryanschultz Editing posts is FANTASTIC!  It's supported by a lot of other fedi servers too, such as Akkomo.

Edit!
@shebang @ryanschultz just infuriates me even more why bird site never Ddd it, because this is such an obviously easy way to do it. Just notify people if someone has edited something they interacted with.. but I guess birds that can just go rot at those point tho lol
@forte It's an option in the latest version of the Mastodon software, which your admin has to install. Not everybody has it yet.
@ryanschultz Thanks for the two excellent guides. After a month, I must say that there is far too much made of the difficulty of usage. I disagree. The interface is simple and intuitive to anyone with an average skill with computers. I particularly liked this description of Mastodon: "Mastodon is about people. Don't treat people like potential customers who might buy your stuff; treat them like people whom you might want to get to know." That's the key to getting the most out of Mastodon.
@ryanschultz this is what I like &why I'm on Mastodon
"Mastodon isn't about leveraging followers into customers. It's not about SEO or brand loyalty. Mastodon is about people. Don't treat people like potential customers who might buy your stuff; treat them like people whom you might want to get to know"
@ryanschultz thanks for the links. Just what I need as a newbie.

Just FYI, I also have a brief guide, which is basically a post that I revised and extended as I discovered and learned more.

Take a look and see whether it's of interest.
