Introducing Spill, a Twitter alternative created by former employees

Alphonzo "Phonz" Terrell and DeVaris Brown, former employees of Twitter, announced the Spill waitlist Friday and quickly received 20,000 sign ups.

@majorlinux That's a hard no from me.

@jik Not sure how the fuck I missed that!

I wasn't gonna plan on using it, but now I'll be actively fighting against it!

@majorlinux @jik They can "spill" this app right in the trash! 😑
@majorlinux

""It's not a web3 thing," Terrell told TechCrunch. "But the use of blockchain is for both crediting creators and setting up a model for us to compensate them automatically. If they have a spill that goes viral and we monetize it, it's really effective.""

This sounds pretty awesome, finally seeing whats hopefully a realistic use of a blockchain. IMHO from working in the cryptocurrency space the whole token/ponzi-scheme aspect was a distraction, so glad to see people having the opportunity to use this tech in hopefully more positive ways.

@pete_wright I'm just burnt on the whole blockchain thing.

I won't support it, but I'm willing to come around on it if someone shows something responsible.

I've yet to see it, though.

@majorlinux

I hear you for sure.

i think i'm probably more excited about the aspect of a platform that more transparently shares profits with creators. hopefully they don't go down the nft/token rabbit hole - but rather leverage a public ledger to make transparent sharing possible.

@majorlinux
Interesting to see how it plays out for Phonz & phrenz but I cant follow along with the no-blockchain comments in here. Not smart enough.

Is there a way to explain it, and explain its potential detriments, as indicated by your hesitations? I was to believe that blockchains are infallable or unbastardizable? No?

Thanks for your time!

@majorlinux
"...will use blockchain to compensate..."
Does that mean monetized creators will be paid in BTC [for example]?

@MudheadInTheMeadows That I don't know. But as I had said earlier, I can't fully get on board with Blockchain technology given how it's been used to date.

I've been told that there is actually good in the tech and it was just exploited for bad, but I can't back something when I have yet to see the good in it.

@majorlinux
Thanks. Its the bad use (corruption schemes I believe?) that Ive been hearing of, yet Im ignorant of the particulars so..just lost on the topic and wanting to know more.

I dont need to be black or gay (for examples) to realize we that we dont need yet-another technology to potentially marginalize even more people. Thats the core of my query- how could that hurt someone? Is this an issue of crypto vs. fiat? I wish my neurons could handle this! Very interested but very lost! Haaa!

@majorlinux This sounds like a startup that wants to gain a market foothold using Black peoples' content, then go mainstream and abandon that Black audience. 🤔

IDK, fam. I think I'm good on that.

@markchappelle @majorlinux
Im sure this conversation is open to everbody but I should shut up and just learn from what you folks say. I identify with probably the least marginalized of cultures but dire to understand our world better.

Btw, @markchappelle I noticed youre an ethnomusicologist! Fascinating! Your discipline and mine, ethnobotany, meet with a hearty handshake; theyre both studies of peoples 😁

Sometimes the musicology and the botany overlap where the instruments are made of plants!

@markchappelle I didn't think about that.

We can't have anything good unless we make it ourselves.

It's why I love Mastodon.
