i don't want to have fascists' words reproduced in front of me unasked
i don't want to be Informed about the same development 400 times
i don't want to drown in endless dunks
i don't want to look at my phone and come away in a bad mood every single time
stop. stop
uhhh, unfollow everyone and start over a third time? :P@eevee this seems like an inherent problem with a system designed for sharing 'what are you thinking about/doing'
"oh here's a news item lemme share it!"
no no no we don't do that around here
why not?
well because when everyone shares the same ugly story it's like a tidal wave!
but we need to share the important things! how will people know that horrible stuff is happening otherwise????
@eevee This is really useful perspective. There's one technical issue in this - the same post gets repeated pretty much every time it's boosted - but it's more of a human problem overall, and something that can only be solved with open communication and mindfulness toward others. Also, while I can't speak for others, I'm personally feeling like I'm re-learning how to curate my feed, and having to unlearn a few bad habits from Twitter, but I've spent the last couple days trying to be more thoughtful about what I boost, since this is a place where I can be a lot more confident that whatever I say or boost will be seen by others (instead of needing to also impress The Algorithm), and therefore I want to make sure I boost things worth boosting, because people will *definitely* see it.
Maybe it'll help others to think of boosting on a more personal level - ie, instead of a vague sense of "clicking this buttons means I want other people to see this", look at it as "clicking this button means sending all my friends a personal message that says 'hey, I want you to see this'". I dunno, that's how I'm trying to look at it, anyway.
@eevee we have an opportunity to not follow some of the toxic influencers that plagued the birdsite, telling us what to like and how to feel about things and other people.
i think it's worth reconsidering if Movetodon is really worth it, and what we all got out of the "drama" a lot of the accounts that the birdsite seemed to revolve around - very much a graduation, if you will.
Shitposting can fuck right off too, I'm just too old for it.
@noicebrewery @eevee I think moving to Mastodon was definitely worth it for you guys: there's a lot less drama here than there is on Twitter, because you don't have parts of the site purposefully built to encourage it, you have a lot more control over what shows up in your timeline, and people who post about that stuff are usually good about CWing their content. This is the most dramatic it's going to get, at least until the Twitter servers die, because you have a bunch of new people showing up complaining about things and the social network hasn't had time to react.
That said, you don't appreciate my shitposting? Sad Garbo-Goblin...
