starting to feel a bit twitter around here.

i don't want to have fascists' words reproduced in front of me unasked

i don't want to be Informed about the same development 400 times

i don't want to drown in endless dunks

i don't want to look at my phone and come away in a bad mood every single time

stop. stop

@eevee hope you have a better day. =>
@eevee i'm right there with you. but i'm also very guilty of this myself. it's hard not to get sucked in. trying to balance keeping in touch with twitter people but also letting that stuff go. maybe i should just make a second account and keep those two things separated 🀷🏽
@sparky_005 this IS my second account πŸ˜©β€‹
@eevee  uhhh, unfollow everyone and start over a third time? :P
@eevee actually maybe hiding boosts will help πŸ€” does that work for the mobile clients?
@sparky_005 i think so (though it doesn't remove them from your existing timeline), and i am doing it fairly aggressively, but it sucks when someone boosts a lot of nice fluffy stuff and then also......not
@eevee yeah it's very much imperfect. i've been adding a lot of mute filters as well but that's also pretty imperfect. i often want to know about something *once* but don't need to repeatedly see it over and over again as people keep posting it or keep talking about it, and obviously the filters don't really work for that use case
@eevee oh and one more thing: i'm optimistic that this is, at least to a degree, only temporary, and that it will die down quite a bit in a little while. i am maybe naive to think that... but i still do!
@eevee @sparky_005 personally, I'm about to remove someone from my follows for that reason: I don't disagree with what he's posting, but I don't come on this account to hear people appropriating rage over terms that are part of my own culture, or whatever liberal outrage is happening in the moment. I come on this account to unwind by going full GoblinMode.

@eevee this seems like an inherent problem with a system designed for sharing 'what are you thinking about/doing'

"oh here's a news item lemme share it!"

no no no we don't do that around here

why not?

well because when everyone shares the same ugly story it's like a tidal wave!

but we need to share the important things! how will people know that horrible stuff is happening otherwise????

@eevee This is really useful perspective. There's one technical issue in this - the same post gets repeated pretty much every time it's boosted - but it's more of a human problem overall, and something that can only be solved with open communication and mindfulness toward others. Also, while I can't speak for others, I'm personally feeling like I'm re-learning how to curate my feed, and having to unlearn a few bad habits from Twitter, but I've spent the last couple days trying to be more thoughtful about what I boost, since this is a place where I can be a lot more confident that whatever I say or boost will be seen by others (instead of needing to also impress The Algorithm), and therefore I want to make sure I boost things worth boosting, because people will *definitely* see it.

Maybe it'll help others to think of boosting on a more personal level - ie, instead of a vague sense of "clicking this buttons means I want other people to see this", look at it as "clicking this button means sending all my friends a personal message that says 'hey, I want you to see this'". I dunno, that's how I'm trying to look at it, anyway.

@eevee It's going to take time for people to unlearn such behaviors. Even I still do it from time to time (or more).

@bersl2 @eevee Actually, you do it enough that I was just thinking of unfollowing you on this account and following you on another one, so...

IDK, do you have two accounts? Could you set something up where you have one that isn't for boosting politics?

@tanuki @eevee uwu

The subtopic matters? My inner Slashdotter-of-old won't let tech-adjacent things go that easily. That's probably where the "make sure everyone can't ignore the important issue" got imported from.

*mental flailing*
*screming at own ass*

@eevee we have an opportunity to not follow some of the toxic influencers that plagued the birdsite, telling us what to like and how to feel about things and other people.

i think it's worth reconsidering if Movetodon is really worth it, and what we all got out of the "drama" a lot of the accounts that the birdsite seemed to revolve around - very much a graduation, if you will.

Shitposting can fuck right off too, I'm just too old for it.

@noicebrewery @eevee I think moving to Mastodon was definitely worth it for you guys: there's a lot less drama here than there is on Twitter, because you don't have parts of the site purposefully built to encourage it, you have a lot more control over what shows up in your timeline, and people who post about that stuff are usually good about CWing their content. This is the most dramatic it's going to get, at least until the Twitter servers die, because you have a bunch of new people showing up complaining about things and the social network hasn't had time to react.

That said, you don't appreciate my shitposting? Sad Garbo-Goblin...

@eevee Yeah, one of the things I like about Mastodon is that you can just like, cut that out of your feed, and it's really easy. I have multiple accounts, and rest assured, I don't intend to use this one for politics beyond depicting a better (sexier) future.
@eevee having the same problem. think it’s been more unavoidable than usual the past couple days. i’m just gonna wait it out and hope that works.
