People rocking up on this platform and expecting it to be as rich and diverse and mature as their carefully nurtured Twitter feed, fine-tuned over a decade to reflect their interests and values, maybe give it a few weeks of actually investing in finding the accounts that interest you before writing the whole thing off as a howling wasteland.
@ottocrat Also, it is not Twitter. It is its own thing with its own peduliarities. Maybe people should take a breath, and enjoy that. This not being Twitter could actually be a good thing.
@maxieq @ottocrat agreed! This is not and will never be Twitter.. we have no billion dollar man… we are a great bunch of people who are hanging out… (and we have John☺️🙏)
@ottocrat Seein some very crude behaviour from people who fancy themselves as opinion leaders.

@ottocrat It’s so strange. Also the lament how complicated it supposedly is.

Man, it took me over a year to get somewhat of a handle on Twitter. Two to three years to kinda get good at it.

In comparison, the intro on Mastodon was light-speed.

@ottocrat I'm especially surprised to see this from people who should be old enough to remember when we had to hit F5 to see new tweets and having 500 followers made you a goddamned celebrity.
@ottocrat The howling wasteland is where we're coming *from*
@ottocrat #Mastodon and #fediverse is way better, less bs, relevant news, interesting views, and it’s improving.
My #Twitter feed always had way too many ads, trolls and bigots in it, and #ElonMusk made it that on steroids

@ottocrat
Personally, the calmer pace (on top of the calmer atmosphere) is utterly delightful.

It'll take time to cultivate it as a trustworthy news source, but it's better than having so many idiotic ads (and posters 😉)

@ottocrat Seriously, just put a little work in. Within my first week my feed was a vastly richer experience than anything I’d had on Twitter in years.
@ottocrat Funny, it took me like a week to be comfy and making friends and such... OTOH, I did do some research and chose what turned out to be a spectacularly good instance for my proclivities.. 🤷

@ottocrat for me it was, totally.

Between choosing a good instance, I did stalk a few. And making 2 instances my home, this and infosec.exchange, my local feeds are concerning, I am spending more time here than I ever did on Twitter, because the content is superior!

@ottocrat
My Twitter feed was hardly rich & diverse. The algorithm threw a lot of rubbish my way.
@Lazarou
@ottocrat This reserve of patience is the one thing people really need.

@ottocrat good advice :) I had to think of you this week as I found an old knitting project stashed in the back of a cupboard.

It's probably going to end up back in the cupboard, tbh :)
