It's literally true, according to that report from Dewey Square Group. Mastodon is by far the most popular. Hive was a distant second. Post is a flyspeck.

Their exit strategy is to be bought by Apple as a controllable Twitter alternative.
The Hive user is not concerned by security, sustainability or safety. They are concerned by familiarity and usability. Hence the iOS app is supposedly great. The android app I'm told very much less so.
