I am new on Mastadon so I would appreciate any suggestions of good cycling accounts to follow - especially those that post photos. Me? I like cycling in the Alps. Does one tag words here? eg: #cycling

@cyclingalps

Yes please do use tags, that's how people not on the same Mastodon server as you will discover you. #cycling is a great tag, you won't have any trouble finding good accounts to follow.

@chicagonz @cyclingalps #BikeTooter is also a great hashtag to follow or use with posts

@cyclingalps Tags are really important here, yes. You cannot search posts by text, only by tags. This is by design because of the distributed system, but also ideologically, to make it difficult to seek out people only to bother them, or for other bad reasons we now know well from the monolithic social networks.

Another difference is that favs are nice but do nothing for post visibility or discoverability. No one else can see your favs. The only way to share stuff is by tags or to boost posts.

@cyclingalps As for accounts, you might see some good ones when you search the tags: # cycling, # biketooter, # velophant, # velophants (I inserted a space here so as not to pollute those tags with meta content)
@ednl thx, very helpful. What's a velophant? :-)
@cyclingalps Velo-elephant! Because the mastodon looks a bit like an elephant.
@ednl Another difference is there is no button available to translate posts that are in a different language than one's primary.

@jverheul That is a shame, yes. Translation services cost money. If you pay for the social media platform by watching ads and getting forked on privacy, then they can pay for that stuff.

Edit: I guess you can use a browser extension in Chrome or Firefox. I don't know if that works well for just tiny parts of the page (I use Safari so no experience with that).

@ednl yes, if I open the post in a Chrome window it gives me the option to translate. Not too bad a workaround.
@jverheul Oh! I do see "Translate" links under every post not in English, now that I enabled advanced view in settings *and* selected a limited number of languages to display. So, not sure which of those did it.
@cyclingalps I found you here because I follow #cycling, if you search for a hash tag at the top of the results page there will be a button to allow you to follow that tag, all posts with it will appear in your home feed, a great way to find people with similar interests
@cyclingalps follow me, I am cycling at least 3 x a week on and around Phuket ... and usually post the best of pics afterwards

@cyclingalps

Greetings 😊 Hashtags are good - include tags #BikeTooter & #biketoot for a wider reach when you're posting (but placed at the end of your text though).
