Is there...like... somewhere we can chip in for all the servers Mastodon is having to add to keep up with new account formation rn
@sarahtaber look for each servers tip jar on their respective about page.
@Admin @sarahtaber This 👆 I joined my servers patron to help support it, but they also have paypal and the coffee one (brain is blanking on app name)
@sarahtaber Each server is its own thing, as I understand it — so, check the “about” section for your server and odds are they are indeed soliciting donations
@sarahtaber most servers are independently run and have their own donation options. I donate to the Patreon of my instance to help cover costs.

@sarahtaber Yeah, unlike most of the web, the About page of a Mastodon instance tends to list useful things like this. Looks like yours is here

Mastodon

A newer server operated by the Mastodon gGmbH non-profit

Mastodon hosted on mastodon.online
@sarahtaber Since you're on one of the gmbh hosted instances, you'll want to use https://opencollective.com/mastodon. If everyone tips their local instance it'll even out :)
Mastodon - Open Collective

Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub

@sarahtaber each server has their own tip jar
@sarahtaber I am on Patreon for one, and the other that I'm using is refusing funds so far!
@sarahtaber for mastodon.online it would be the main patreon, other instances have their own funding.
@sarahtaber On web browser, if you go to the "about" portion of your server's info (it's on the lower left in Chrome), there's usually a donation link.
@sarahtaber check the about page for your instance. there’s often a patreon where you can chip in a few bucks a month
@sarahtaber Best to financially support the admins of your own instance.
@sarahtaber general format for finding if your instance has a”tip jar”…
Check out the /about page (eg https://[instance name]/about) for a donation link.
@sarahtaber The mastodon project (which happens to host the server you're currently on) has a Patreon. This also supports development of the core software. Other servers have their own arrangements... https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

@sarahtaber It's good to know who the admin is of the server/ instance you're on. I'm on an instance where the admins communicate regularly. It's quite satisfying. If they need a $$ contribution, they'll let us know, I'm sure. I guess it varies from instance to instance.
@sarahtaber I believe each Mastodon instance has it owns place for contributions. Check the about link in the lower left corner of the window/screen, it should have patronage information.
@sarahtaber
Maybe you shared it, but for a longer opinion of what mastodon might need to survive structurally (I am not smart enough to know myself): https://techpolicy.press/priorities-to-make-the-fediverse-sustainable/
Priorities to Make the Fediverse Sustainable

This is the time to start thinking about the long-term sustainability and governance of the new, bigger Mastodon, says Alek Tarkowski.

@sarahtaber mastodon.world has a patron link on its home page. Maybe others do, too.
@sarahtaber many servers have a Patreon link on their about page.
