PSA: the 'official' Mastodon apps for iOS and Android are under-developed and not fully featured. You may want to try the community-made apps instead that have been around for years already and are established and work well. on iOS, try MetaText, and on Android, try Tusky - though you can also just pin the web browser to your home screen as a web app and it functions like a fully featured app with push notifications. :)
@Curator I would also recommend Subway Tooter for Android. It is very powerful and GREAT at working with multiple accounts, say if you have a Main and a Tabletop Roleplaying account as I do
@Canageek Ah nice! I think Tusky also allows managing multiple accounts but haven't tried it for that.

@Curator @Canageek

Tusky indeed does also allow for managing multiple accounts.

On Android, Tusky and Subway Tooter are both very nice, and very different from one another, so both worth trying out.

@emacsomancer @Curator @Canageek I picked Tusky because it most resembled Twitter.

Might have to give Subway Tooter a try.

@Keab42 @emacsomancer @Curator It uses a column basis, so you can order all of your home columns next to one another, or arrange things by account or whatever you want. Plus you can hold down almost any button to tell it to do that from another account.

@Canageek @Curator ooh, that looks more my style - thank you ^_^!

in particular, this is the first one I've seen with good multilingual features (language filters, setting + showing a post's language, etc.)

@heather @Curator Glad I can help! Might be due to the fact the author is Japanese.
@Curator But the official app is made by John Mastodon himself!
@Curator I’m reading this on MetaText. Works great for me👍
@jmechner *in Sandal from DA: Origins' voice* Endorsement!
@jmechner @Curator
That’s my current app. I switched from Tootle.
@jmechner @Curator Scrolls and reads great, but putting anything at all in the search bar like John or #JoanMastodon (on an iPad) does nothing, zilch

@Curator I just heard tusky can edit, but I tried it today and no go. I'm sad.

The built in webapp is very nice, but can't store multiple accounts.

@denebeim Firefox is excellent at this, thanks to its Containers. I'm logged into multiple accounts all via web interface right now. ^_^
@moira @denebeim Do you have containers on Android though? Firefox tells me it's desktop only. :(

@Artha @denebeim I'm mostly laptop/desktop.

My solution for this on phone is one session in an app, one session in a browser. (They are separate.)

If I need to go above that on a phone, that's why I have two browsers, which makes three.

@Curator I learned that today! Didn't know that you can follow friggin hashtags, since it isn't possible in the official app. Got Tusky half an hour ago and it's so much better already.
@Curator Using Metatext on my iOS devices and it’s really great. The official Mastodon App is a good start. Good to know there’s still developments in progress.
@Curator been using Tusky on Android for a while and it's been good! Nice to see recommendations for alternatives though.
@lorigga
I've used Tusky and have Fedilab. Both good. Fedilab can translate and more color choices. Both have edit (delete and redraft)
@Curator
@Curator I'm using Tusky on my android phone and liking it so far!
@Curator for tusky, be aware that video playback does not work at the moment in the latest BETA release. The latest stable does not have this issue.

@Curator

@kritzelkatze

Tried WebApp, Tusky and Fedilab.
Using Fedilab now, it's the best app imho.

@Curator 15 minutes on Tusky and I removed the official Android app. 😅
@Curator Last I compared, the web app was best on Android, but these things can change quickly!
@Curator Sadly Tusky does not support login with security keys. Do you have other suggestions for Android ?
@Curator Does MetaText allow editing toots after publishing?
@Bioalchemy13 boosting because I don't know :D
@Bioalchemy13 And now unboosting it because it's had a bunch of replies and I don't want to overwhelm you XD
@Bioalchemy13 @Curator yup. It’s called delete and redraft.

@Bioalchemy13 @Curator

Not exactly. The only menu options are still:
- Delete
- Delete & re-draft

But the Delete & re-draft option copies everything, including photos and ALT text, into a new post so you can more easily fix typos etc

@Bioalchemy13 @Curator It doesn’t, you have to switch to the web interface to edit.

And when I looked into it, I discovered the person behind Metatext has gone on hiatus for health reasons, so new features won’t be forthcoming any time soon, unless someone else takes over the project. 😔

@Curator My current Mastodon client 😎
@Curator I'd like to recommend Megalodon on Android as well. It's very clean and has features tusky and the official app are missing.
@Curator I’ve been using Mammoth as my daily driver on iOS. It’s in beta but the updates are rapid and I’ve seen considerable improvement in the last week. Highly recommend it!
@Curator
I use the web browser for most social media networks. Works very well.
@Curator Can confirm, Metatext is great for iOS!

@Curator my preferred Android app is @megalodon right now.

It's got the UI of the default app which I feel is very clean and intuitive but has all the features that are missing. I've tried the other apps but they didn't check all my boxes like Megalodon is doing right now!

@Curator Tusky is great. Only downside is that the 'edit' feature appears to delete the toot and repost it, which is a vert bird-like approach.
@therealpembo Ah yeah, I think it only has the 'old delete and re-draft feature in right now and doesn't have the new edit feature in yet.

@Curator I’ve been using Mammoth, from the guys who made Tweetbot back in the day. Is currently in testing.

Join the Mammoth: for Mastodon beta

Available on iOS

@Curator Any iOS and Android ones with a usable tablet UI you’d recommend?
@orcinus Boosting to see if anyone else knows :)
@Curator @orcinus I like Toot! on iOS (paid) for both iPhone and iPad. You can check out screenshots for both on the app store (not shown, but Toot! supports themes/dark mode). https://apps.apple.com/us/app/toot/id1229021451

@mandrakeOPE @Curator The key question (for me) is how it handles landscape. I'm weird, i use tablets in landscape ¯_(ツ)_/¯

(Especially large ones.)

@mandrakeOPE @Curator Unbad! Thanks a lot for the screen!
@orcinus @Curator That's on an iPad mini (and I reduced the resolution for posting). I would assume it scales up to fit more on a bigger iPad screen. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Hope this helps, cheers! cc: @tootapp
@orcinus @Curator I've been playing with apps on both iOS and Android, but nothing works better for me than just using it in a web browser.

@orcinus @Curator fedilab is my current pick for app, but to be honest it's still not as well designed as the regular mobile web interface.

The ability to follow more than one server's local feed is really nice though

@craig @Curator Thanks, i'll give it a spin on a Samsung tab - curious to see how it'll handle the wide aspect ratio.
@orcinus @Curator i‘d highly recommend the toot! app for ios. it‘s great for ipads as well. i‘ve tried all the other apps out there and settled on this one
@orcinus @Curator both Tusky and Fedilab work well on a very large screen phone, but whether they scale properly at tablet size is an exercise for the reader :)

@orcinus @Curator I use Metatext on both iPhone and iPad. Works great!
@theslimdude @Curator its use of screen space leaves something to be desired on the ipad, sadly
@theslimdude @Curator Toot is a little better, but still not quite there…
