In today's #Linux and #opensource news video, we have an unholy group of companies working on a FOSS competitor to #Google Maps, the death of adblockers on #Chrome being postponed, and #Apple working on allowing 3rd party App Stores on iOS, plus #XFCE 4.18 being released, and the @PINE64 PineTab 2 being announced:

TROUBLE for Google Maps, Adblockers aren't dead, 3rd Party Stores on iOS: Linux & Open Source News

YouTube
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 Overture is meant to be an OSM competitor, not a GMaps competitor. It's made up of 90% previous OSM corporate contributors who got mad they couldn't take over the OSM foundation and make it corporate and for-profit. It will just be a less open, non crowdsourced, corporate version of OSM
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 The point of this project is to not contribute back to actually open projects

@luna

Well put. Time will tell if their will be a transfer of data between Overture and OSM or not.

@thelinuxEXP

@luna @thelinuxEXP @PINE64 pretty sure overture is just a QA'd version of OSM data
@DevOpsSec @thelinuxEXP More like OSM overlaid with their often low quality often proprietary data done with their conventions and made to more easily earn more money ($3 million to become a board member, compared to OSMs $0!). They all already QA'd OSM

There go my minutes of life, watching another video.
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64
Hey Nick, I've seen there is a Tilvids Channel you have. When do you upload/link your Youtube videos to that channel? I wanted to watch your newest news on something that's not Youtube.
@edebala @PINE64 They get auto synced so it generally takes a few minutes after the video is live on YouTube :)
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 Nice!! Going to watch it, as soon it's on the peertube channel. 😛
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 „(…) and #Apple working on allowing 3rd party App Stores on iOS (…)“ — wait, WHAT?!? Guess I need to watch this vid as soon as I‘m home!
@thelinuxEXP man, type c and third party app stores would get me to buy an Iphone and the fact that Apple dislikes the fact that they have those things would make it even funny for me. If it comes that far.
Are these buying points for you too if it would hapoen in 2-3 years ?
@inuyashatoast I already use an iPhone currently! USB C I don’t care about at all, I charge wirelessly (although it would be good to get rid of that outdated lightning), third party app stores would be amazing though!

@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 Very excited about the Maps alternative! Even after trying OSM, MagicEarth etc I have always had to rely on Google Maps for this.

I'm really rooting for this project and hope developers build apps for this soon!

@thelinuxEXP I appreciated hearing another sensible reason for why the new map initiative is not just a contribution to OSM, besides the depressive one of the companies wanting control of the data.
@thelinuxEXP @PINE64 Can't wait to see what comes out of the Apple sideloading thing. Maybe I won't have a reason to prefer Android anymore?
