@amart There's a lot of overlap with what you've already listed, but @newsbot includes many of those due to high reliability ratings, and *should* drop/add sources if they lose/gain reliability.

@BoydStephenSmithJr @newsbot Thanks for the mention of newsbot, this may be a good alternative for some folks.

I like newsbot but don’t use it myself because I want to weed / silence some news sources at various times without dealing with filters and as individual follows I can mute them for 5 minutes, an hour, or a day really quickly. Reuters and DW in particular can be like trying to drink from a firehose at times.

@amart So these are just unofficial bots syndicating headlines? Disappointing that more of those media outlets haven't made at least some move to establish a foothold on Mastodon. :(
@SDoleMelipone I agree it’s disappointing more aren’t native. On the other hand, the more people follow the bots, the more likely someone on the social media team at the home office will notice and bring it to the attention of management that they are losing out on controlling the distribution of their own content - at least that’s what I hope.
@SDoleMelipone @amart many are on Post...
@mgifford @amart Are there reliable stats on daily active users for Post and Mastodon?

@SDoleMelipone @mgifford I don't know how / where this page is getting its stats, but this is one data point for Mastodon monthly active users.

I haven't seen any figures for Post.news.

Mastodon Help - Instances

Mastodon instances

@amart @mgifford Thanks. Interesting page, and that’s helpful for scale if true. That number of users is very small. Makes the supposed flagging of mastodon links on bird site even more petty.

@amart @SDoleMelipone I suspect that Post will only make that transparent if/when they feel the number is impressive.

After the rate of adoption of ChatGPT, very little rate of adoption looks impressive.

@amart @SDoleMelipone @mgifford I think the following is more correct: https://bitcoinhackers.org/@mastodonusercount - you can follow @mastodonusercount for hourly statistics.
@SDoleMelipone @amart Not that I know of. I feel Mastodon has a bigger user base, but not sure.

@mgifford @SDoleMelipone Agree many are on Post - but Post.news is a much different vibe from Mastodon.

My goal was to see as much as I can on one platform/feed vs. Post, Twitter, Facebook, Google News, Apple News, etc. - but others may desire a different news consuming experience.

Mostly it bothered me folks were experiencing friction or news withdrawal being on Mastodon and in my recent experience that's not necessary.

@amart @mgifford @SDoleMelipone I'm with you in wanting one platform to rule my news feed. The list function here is helpful.

@mgifford @TheStormcrow @amart @SDoleMelipone

I haven't tried lists, but I think I'll make one from this collection.

@amart @SDoleMelipone Would be nice if other services just participated in contributing to federated content. Really don't see the downside for them.
@SDoleMelipone @amart
The @DeutscheWelle may be a Bot but it consistently links to important European and World news in English
@SDoleMelipone @amart It seems not totally easy. Other than w twitter you will need infrastructure to set up an own instance, have to look at several legal challenges from data protection to liability, have to adapt ToS (expand existing moderation rules with rules how to deal with offenses from other instances, i.e. when to block a whole instance), staff it - for a still very very small audience. Even twitter had/has a special audience not too representative and small compared i.e. to FB.
@schneider_EF @SDoleMelipone You're exactly right - but all larger instances should be dealing with most/all of these issues already.
@amart @SDoleMelipone Definitely. But I suppose most media shouldn't and won't be hosted on "foreign" instances. Easier tech wise of course relying on host's experience. But I don't think they will share reponsibilities like content moderation. It is and was already tough defending the outsourced responsibility to big central hosts like twitter and FB, but "no names" compared to them won't look promising even if they may have more good faith than the big ones.
@amart Thanks so much for sharing these account links! Great use for social media bot accounts... I added these to a "news" list on #Mastodon. Wish lists could be shared here like we can on the bird site... :-(
@wfryer @amart Anyone happen to have a list of #infosec news sources?
@wfryer @amart I've been using the awesome @itsecbot bot for now.

@grecs @wfryer I would hope someone on your local infosec.exchange might have some insight on that - not my area of expertise.

My goal was to try and reduce friction for people coming here from the fowl site who thought that Mastodon didn’t have any options for current news - while having obvious limitations, I’ve found these news sources more than adequate and frankly don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything from #birdsite except local/regional news & weather

@amart @wfryer Thanks for your efforts! Hopefully, some of our community saw my toot and something will come of that.
@grecs @wfryer @amart

@BleepingComputer has a fediverse account and it's not a bot which is great.

There's also @hackernews_bot as well.

#Krebsonsecurity is not on the #fediverse but @briankrebs does have a #fediverse account to follow.

There's also several security reporters like @dangoodin who reports for #ArsTechnica, @agreenberg who reports for #WIRED, @zackwhittaker who reports for #TechCrunch, @mattburgess for #WIRED, @couts for #WIRED, @lawrenceabrams for #BleepingComputer, @campuscodi of #RiskyBusiness and more!

Security firm @ESET is also on the #fediverse as well as their research arm, @ESETresearch

#infosec #cybersecurity #news

Hope this helps!

I need to take a day to add the RSS feeds to my Friendica account (no bots).
@amart Incredibly useful set of links! Thank you!

@macrumors

Is there a common hashtag that all of these news organizations are using? I'd rather be able to go to a
separate place to see their posts than have them dominating my main news feed.

@tutormentor1 Unfortunately there is no common hashtag here. The folks who setup the bots are mostly just forwarding the feed from whatever source they're retrieving it from.

As the movie "what about Bob" said: "baby steps" ... hopefully we'll get there one day.

@amart

Last week I saw a post with #nonprofit and #nonprofits. I clicked on the link and saw posts specific to those hashtags. Now I check those posts daily.

Maybe terms like
#generalnews #USnews #WorldNew could be embedded in posts by media and reporters.

Or other terms that any think are important.

@tutormentor1 @amart you can also follow the hashtag if you want. I do it through the app Tusky.

@Anthony @amart

Is Tusky app only for phone or is there desk top version? Does it work like TweetDeck?

Rolling Stone , as noted, not a Bot. Someone on that account is doing some actual engagement. #rollingstone
It is great to see these news services on Mastodon. May be ecology journals will be next?
@amart
thank you! I’ve been hoping to find a list like this!!
@macrumors @RollingStone @tchambers @TheGuardian_us @cnnbrk @BBC @reuters @BBCWorld @dwnews_bot @WashingtonPost @arstechnica @NPR_USNews @CNN @wsj @NYTimes Rolling Stone, Ars and MacRumors are natively here. Given the instance for CNN Breaking News I think it is also a bot along with all others.
@amart As much as I wish they all had presences, only a few of these are actual news org accounts on Mastodon. Most are the sketchy Twitter-bridge bot instance relaying their tweets, or another relay service.
@dalias I totally agree with you. My hope is that if the bot subscribers grow the social media staff at the news orgs will take notice and begin to natively post here since after all the more social media sites they post to the more job security they have.

@amart
@CNN @NPR_USNews @NYTimes @TheGuardian_us @WashingtonPost

It's cool to have news relays and all, but it's tremendously disappointing that the newsrelay.org bots seem to cynically just put the word "Hello" as the alt-text on all images they post.

@libraryben Sorry the link you posted isn't working for me.

I did try and find a "breaking news" account but none seemed to post frequently (but not too frequently) and not duplicate what I was seeing elsewhere.

@amart no worries. It was a joke with the weirdest news bot I’ve seen. Thank you for the list!
