Direct Messages here are better described as Mentioned People Only toots (posts).

Direct Messages will appear in your timeline and be visible to ANYONE that you have tagged in this toot 👥​

So, if you are Direct Messaging someone, but write the handle of someone else to recommend them (or something else...), they will ALSO be included in this Direct Messages  ​

Be careful with this! ​⚠️

Direct Messages on Mastodon, like on many other platforms, are also not end-to-end encrypted. This means the administrator(s) of your instance and the instance of the person you are sending it to could, if they wanted, read them  ​

Do not write any sensitive information in Mastodon Direct Messages. Or on any other platform that does not provide solid end-to-end encryption 🔒​

@Em0nM4stodon I actually think this is a design issue that needs to be fixed, but I dont really have the energy to fight on that hill, but I think its too confusing for new people and the functionality, especially the encryption thing needs to be more clear.
