With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:

1. Welcome!

2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.

3. Lots of people are willing to help.

4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.

5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.

Be patient.

@mmasnick also, good for newbies to know the way DMs are different. i have been forwarding on your mastodon post about the way mentioning someone in DMs yanks them into the convo
@eleanorina Heh. Yeah, thought about that one too, but I often get people misinterpreting that one...
@eleanorina @mmasnick wait, how do you send DMs?
Newbie here haha

@BoredBaguette1408 @mmasnick

i haven’t looked into that because the way that anyone can pull someone else in seems like a wonky UI 🥲 but hold on, brb …

here, this looks like a good explainer https://gizmodo.com/mastodon-how-to-dm-send-messages-twitter-1849759852

New to Mastodon? Here's How to DM Like a Pro

Direct messages work a little different on the alternative to Elon Musk's Twitter. A short guide on sending them properly.

Gizmodo
@BoredBaguette1408 @eleanorina even though some instances call them DMs, think of them as posts with limited visibility only to those NAMED in the post. So this is a public post, and then I'll DM you
@mmasnick @BoredBaguette1408 @eleanorina inch-resting. Thanks for the dope thread. This place seems cool. Big fan just as a political philosophy student, btw❤️

@mmasnick

6. It takes a little effort at first. The more you post, boost, and follow right from the jump, the better it will get.

@Ateriath @mmasnick *how* can you follow? I followed a few through MoveToDon but then it timed out, and I can't follow anyone manually - it stays as "follow" and I get a pop-up saying "too many requests." I've seen others talking about it, but the only help sites for "too many requests" are on programmer sites and above my comprehension. Been going on all day, so not sure if I need to wait it out, and for how long, or if I need to do something else.
@Ateriath @mmasnick huh, making a comment fixed the situation immediately. Maybe there's a discord-style "post first before you can do too much" thing, or maybe it's just coincidence that it cleared right then. Either way, hooray!
@Dangandblast @Ateriath @mmasnick My guess is that the influx of new users is overloading the service. Have you tried again after a few hours?

@mmasnick this perfectly reflects my #TwitterMigration experience.

Some things are better. Some things aren't. Instead of getting hung up on not being able to do something like quote tweet, focus on experiencing it as it is for all of its differences.

@mmasnick Compares well to Twitter’s new-user greeting:
@mmasnick @kylewoodley I just laughed so hard I scared the cat…. Haven’t seen that Far Side comic in way too many years. Pretty on-point, too…
A brief introduction to Mastodon - Adam Fields - Medium

This is adapted from a presentation I gave to a few people, and my main takeaway from that is that there are some confusing differences between how Twitter works and how Mastodon works. This is my…

Medium
@fields @mmasnick @edbott thanks. Still confused. But trying to figure it out.
@MidLifeBroad @mmasnick @edbott what are you confused by?
@fields @mmasnick @edbott I’m not sure I’m seeing a “feed”. Do I have to only follow hashtags?
@MidLifeBroad @fields @mmasnick You have to follow people. The more you follow, the more you will see in your Home feed.
@fields @mmasnick @edbott This was super helpful and easy to understand. Thanks!
@Andrewguy @mmasnick @edbott you’re welcome! Glad it was helpful!
@mmasnick I arbitrarily picked a server when I signed up and am now feeling insecure that I'm not seeing what's happening on other servers, and not sure how to fix that... #helpmeplease
@ugfonyb servers federate so you can see people across servers. just follow a bunch of good active people... see who they boost... and follow more people. and soon you'll see plenty of stuff.
@ugfonyb @mmasnick yeah once you are following a lot of people I don’t think it matters too much which server you’re on in terms of your home feed.

@mmasnick I worry about how well the federated architecture will respond to bad actors. When Russian intelligence starts up tens of thousands of bot accounts on different federated servers, I hope the admins will be able to keep up. The moderator to user ratio should be better than on Twitter, so hopefully it'll come out positive.

As with email, I worry about spam accounts. If I were a spammer, I'd be thinking about transient accounts that follow a few thousand people, send a couple messages.

@rbos i worry too... though I think there are ways to deal with it. At some point I need to write something longer.
@rbos @mmasnick each server will be finding ways to deal with the problem of bots etc.. I think there will be a bunch of innovative solutions shared among the most trustworthy instances. It’s all about trust.
@spinal @mmasnick I have high hopes. There's a lot of experience dealing with the problem in SMTP, so maybe some of that will apply.
@mmasnick Yes, and I keep thinking, “they’ll fix that” 💫
@mmasnick
6. Have a profile picture and a bio. The more detailed, the better
7. Post an #introduction
8. Realize that the website has a cool multi column advanced UI
9. Play with different mobile clients
10. There is no Quote T[wee,oo]t here. Yes, there are reasons. Yes, people disagree about those.
@dirkhh @mmasnick where is the multi-column advanced UI?

@epro
Preferences->Appearance ->Advanced Web Interface

@mmasnick

@dirkhh @mmasnick Awesome -- thank you!

cc @andriak

@epro Thanks. Still want more, better. And I'll switch soon to a light background - just wanted zero confusion about where I was. My other backgrounds are generally light.
@epro I scroll left/right to scan 10-12 Tweetdeck columns. Haven't invested in massive screens to do this, unlike some people I know.
@andriak jeez double-digit columns is too much
@epro Main focus is three. I add one or two when checking a particular thing. And I miss URL search lots.
@epro But late last night, I pretty much saw whatever I needed by watching @mmasnick. Of course his follower numbers bear out that usefulness. Other times, looking at #mosstodon is a delight.
@dirkhh @mmasnick 11. It's not about getting boosts and favourites, it's about what you discover.
@dvavasour @dirkhh @mmasnick And the friends we made along the way.

@dvavasour @dirkhh @mmasnick

12. Civility is the name of the game. We're all here to make this work, and you'll find most people are kind and good-intentioned, even if you disagree with them.

13. Listen to the people (minority groups, especially) who point out the problems of hatred and/or denial of problems that still exist across the Fediverse, and do your part to make it a better place. Just because we have a new place to gather doesn't mean everyone's prejudices have disappeared.

@dirkhh @mmasnick (QT) There should definitely be a quote tweet.

@MaxPow3r11
Well, Elon Musk (green verified) - as I said, there are arguments about the pile-on nature of what this can cause. There are rational arguments opposed to that, but the longer I've been here the more I've managed to get used to it. Simply comment on a post and then THEN boost it. Not the same, but people who follow you still get roughly an equivalent opportunity to engage...

@mmasnick

@dirkhh @mmasnick I like QTs because it allows me to share a thought on something and present the context for my thinking. Posting a comment and retweeting ("boosting") does not achieve the same result imo.
@MaxPow3r11
the other option is to include a link to the post. That does mostly the right thing in some of the Mastodon apps (but isn't intuitive at all in the web interface).
What I've also tried (but then decided against) was posting a screenshot of the post (with appropriate alt text) plus a link to it.
Clunky, for sure.
@mmasnick
@dirkhh @mmasnick I know there are workarounds. The QT works better in every way imo though.

@MaxPow3r11 @dirkhh @mmasnick

I agree, why make something more difficult and less effective to approximate the same result?

@dirkhh @MaxPow3r11 @mmasnick

Quoting something and commenting on it is the essence of blogging. A "microblogging" platform without it will always feel unfinished, IMHO.

@vlvtelvis
I keep repeating myself. You can still do that here. It's just DIFFERENT from the way it works on Twitter...
I'm sure some of the Mastodon apps will find a way to simulate this more closely in the future.

@MaxPow3r11 @mmasnick

@dirkhh @MaxPow3r11 @mmasnick There's nothing approximating a blockquote.
@vlvtelvis @dirkhh @MaxPow3r11 there are instances who have implemented quote tweets. some mastodon forks have it.
@dirkhh @mmasnick thank you for the added bullet points! It reminded me that in my haste to find people I had been following on here, I had forgotten a profile pic. 🍻
@ToSkinADonkey and your bio is a little... thin (with only a Twitter link) 🤷🏼‍♂️😇
@dirkhh yeah certainly needs work, but a picture field is easier to populate then words. I'll get to it 😆
@dirkhh @mmasnick hmmmm. Curious about why no quote tweet/toot?
@dirkhh @mmasnick I’d be willing to bet that “call-out” culture is more muted here, at least that’s my experience so far. I miss boosting a toot with my own spin/perspective. I could RT and then reply, but not as efficient. Hope it evolves on the platform. Perhaps a trail even.

@coralsncaves @dirkhh the belief (which many people, including me, strongly disagree with) is that it leads to "dunking" and brigading and other harassing activity more than anything useful.

I think it's a useful tool. But The community feels strongly about it.

There ARE some instances that have implemented it however.
