Silly question, but what do blue checkmarks mean here on Mastodon?
@gwensnyder Nothing, they’re just ironic additions to your user name.
@gwensnyder That you've linked your profile to your website.
@MajorBedhead @gwensnyder what you're talking about is something different than the question asked I think, i.e., URLs in profiles with check marks next to the link. And yeah that means the website has a link back to your profile with the rel="me" attribute set, confirming it is actually a website that user controls.
@gwensnyder they mean someone's instance admin enabled them as a custom emoji, and people decided to put them in their display name
@gwensnyder It's just an emoji, some people think it's funny
@gwensnyder absolutely nothing, people should not use them. It's just a custom  emoji that some servers have.
@gwensnyder That people thought it was funny at some point & then were too lazy to take them back off their profiles/handles . . .
@gwensnyder honestly it always seems a bit sus to me as there is no verification system here
Get verified on Mastodon with your website

@Guerin @gwensnyder fair enough but that still has nothing to do with the blue checkmark which means nothing
@AbandonedAmerica indeed. I was just replying to your point about verification^^

@gwensnyder
@Guerin @gwensnyder oh yeah, I got you! Thanks, I had forgotten about that 😊
@AbandonedAmerica @gwensnyder The verification system is to embed a bit of code in a website you own or have access rights to. The website is the verification.
@Kichae @gwensnyder yeah, I forgot that, but the blue check here still is pretty meaningless
@AbandonedAmerica @gwensnyder what's the advantage of a blue check over the info field style of verification?
@satchlj @gwensnyder ahhhh that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying a blue check here is worthless, not that another system of verification is less valid
@AbandonedAmerica @gwensnyder

that makes sense - I agree, it's important to educate newcomers to the fediverse that blue checks are just a joke here
@AbandonedAmerica @gwensnyder there was a Monica Lewinsky account that seemed like it might be legit for a few days, then it took a turn. It literally started to send out MAGAesque stuff. And now it’s gone.

@gwensnyder

Not a silly question!

For me, it's just poking fun at Twitter Blue.

@gwensnyder It means the person who owns the account decided to put it there.
@gwensnyder It means you have verified to yourself that you are yourself. It's the best central authority.
