The "bookmark" feature (next to the star in the web UI) may be the least loved and mentioned feature in Mastodon, but it's darn useful.

1) Hm, I might want to read this later. -> Bookmark

2) What a great picture! -> Bookmark and Fav and Boost!!11

3) Do I want to follow this account? Let me take a look later. -> Bookmark

4) I should boost this again sometime. -> Bookmark

Search (somewhat deliberately) sucks, making bookmarking essential to find stuff again. Use it liberally. :)

@eloquence indeed. always do it this way. :)

@eloquence

Also for your own stuff, the auto delete feature lets you set it to not delete anything you bookmarked. You can also do the same for stuff you boost or fav, so lot of flexibility there.

@eloquence I use it as a “read later” feature
@eloquence this a good stuff, thank you for sharing. Really really appreciate how helpful and kind everyone here has been, restores one’s faith in humanity a bit. And damn if I’ll take whatever hope and optimism and glimmer of decency I can get these days. Also thanks to @steveumstead for the boost for me to see this. Loving this platform
@eloquence On iOS mobile there are three dots at the top right corner. Click that and “Bookmark” is an option.
@eloquence For me: I want to show this to spouse who is off doing something and I will never find it again if I keep scrolling —>
@eloquence OH MY GOD, THERE'S A BOOKMARK FEATURE!
@eloquence Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV), and obviously has.
@eloquence not in the app?¿
@groms It depends on the app, there are so many! In Tusky (Android), they are found under the user menu. I don't have experience with any of the other apps.

@eloquence

I am greatly missing this in the App and on Tusky, in particular, as there is no fulltext search on #Mastodon.

(E.g. have been trying to find an older toot of mine, but keep failing. 😞)

@HistoPol

Tusky does have the bookmark feature, FYI. It's in the menu that appears when you tap on your profile picture.

@eloquence

Thanks, have now started using it.

Too bad, though, you cannot put the bookmarks in folders/categories, as in a desktop browser.

@eloquence I have just tried it. It works. Thanks.
@eloquence could you screenshot that - can’t find it.

@WenduK

Are you using the web UI or one of the mobile apps? I can unfortunately only speak to the web UI and the Tusky app for Android.

In the web UI, it's in the right-hand menu that also has "Home" and "Notifications".

In Tusky, it's hidden under your profile if you click your profile image.

@eloquence I boosted, favorited and bookmarked this toot. Thanks!

h/t @pcrampton

@eloquence Why would search deliberately suck? I see that as a weakness.

@pooterheadpharm

There's a lot of concern about search being used as a way to target individuals who say certain things.

So for example, if I say "trans rights are human rights", a transphobic harasser might have a search running on that phrase to find folks to target.

Hence the bias towards using hashtags to make posts discoverable if and when you want them to be.

I have mixed feelings about the current approach but I think any iteration will have to take that concern into account.

@eloquence I'd just like a search capability that helps for inexactitude about name spelling and variances with capitalizations, spacings etc. For starters.
@pooterheadpharm For account search? For that I agree -- account search is kind of a nightmare right now.
