Elon is trying to say what I’m posting isn’t public information.
ADS-B and ACARS are all over public frequency and are acquired by organizations like ADSBExchange.
This is like saying AM or FM signals aren’t public and that reciciving a frequency is private.
Aviation enthusiasts have been reciciving this information over the air for atleast a decade now. Even companies like FlightAware and FlightRadar24 rely on hobbyists to receive this data.
ACARS links PIA codes to tail numbers.
As well spotterlead.net

@JxckS @arictoler shared a good paper on the faults with PIA numbers here: https://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/files/13229/flying-in-private-mode.pdf

Still reading through it, but from my understanding it sounds like Elon's jets didn't have updated PIA's so they were able to be tracked like any normal plane? Not sure if that's the most accurate explanation of if you'd be able to clarify.

@godin @JxckS @arictoler I am also confused about this. Was it that Elon didn't update his PIAs or that the location info came from separate sets of public data were then linked together? or both?
For anyone who wants to say otherwise my code is public and has been https://github.com/Jxck-S/plane-notify
GitHub - Jxck-S/plane-notify: Notify if a selected plane has taken off or landed using ADS-B data. Compares older data to newer data to determine if a landing or takeoff has occurred. As well as nav modes, emergency squawk and resolution advisory notifications. Can output to Twitter, Discord, Mastodon, and Telegram

@JxckS yup. It’s on Elon to lock down his tail number.
@zzarana @JxckS He already has, it's called LADD. But that's weak legislation and the ADS-B transponder output is public by design on 1090MHz. If the flight tracking sites decide to abide by that, that's their choice, but whilst Elon may control Twitter, if he wants to use a private jet he has to play by FAA rules.
@JxckS Downloaded two days ago. Now trying to learn python. In fact, you’re more than welcome to create an account on my instance “altTwitter” dot com, and auto-post there too. I still want to learn python. I can make you a no liability admin as well. My day job is ResLife director (TX college), and if you’re eligible to live in a (accredited university) FL dorm, you pass my test.
@scott @JxckS as far as I know, python is open source you you can learn for free if you dig around a little online.
@JxckS Hang in there, Jack. Sane people know you’re one of the good guys. 👍
@JxckS You’re doing great work!
@JxckS PUBLIC CODE, PUBLIC DATA. ELON, consider yourself TRACKED FOR LIFE.
@JxckS weird that you writing some code to collect publicly available data may have been a motivating factor for elon to spend 44 billion dollars on a website

@JxckS I was just looking at def get_avg_fuel_price, where you grab numbers from an HTML table. I did this in the 90s to get my company's stock price (Borland), and display it on a very rudimentary chart.

Very rudimentary.

Every few weeks the app would break, because the site would change its HTML.

In a few lines you're able to do what took many, many lines of OWL C++ code. lol

@JxckS it's not people here sayin it.

😉😉

He's a liar. He's using this doxxing thing to van reporters critical of Tesla that weren't even reporting on you. His ex wife said he lied about something else involving one if his kids before too.

Musk used to hack / spy on / stalk /dox / file fslse reports on & everything else to anyone he considered an enemy. Now he's banning anybody talking about when he did it.

@JxckS keep doing what you're doing! There was a time when Elon would have cheered you on for being so innovative. Now he is a giant lumbering dinosaur, bloated with money and fame. He's afraid of you because you hold him accountable. Thank you!
@JxckS ROI. You know what that stands for? Radio on Internet
@JxckS Keep strong friend! You are standing up for so much more than just freedom of speech.
@JxckS he lies and he knows enough idiots will believe his lies

@JaseApple @JxckS They don't need to believe something to try and shame people online with it.

Does everyone who calls in a bomb threat to a Children's Hospital or Public Library really believe they are protecting children from "groomers"?

@JxckS where do I learn how to be so confident yet so wrong about everything like Mr. Big Brain is?
@jake @JxckS be disgustingly rich enough for sycophants to agree with everything you say
@gleepdorf 😂 seriously though, am I the only one who thinks that sounds like an absolutely miserable existence?
@jake @JxckS It's an artifact of gaining great wealth while exploiting the labor of others. Some avoid this if they have a commitment or nature not to maintain empathy and humility, and they'll also not exploit workers or fight worker/union organizing efforts.
@JxckS

As much as people say #Musk is brilliant, he has a pretty poor understanding of how things work outside of his bubble. This saga shows how oblivious he is when it comes to civilian aviation & it doesn't seem that he wants to know how it works & just digs in to his false claims...
Akkoma

@JxckS to be fair, destination and ETA via improperly/differently sanitized FAA SWIM feeds that can be correlated with a position/aircraft really isn't meant to be public; IMHO that's a loophole that can reasonably be closed, and doesn't have an adverse impact on accountability.

Agree 100% that broadcast position is fair game though - that cat's out of the bag as it's a fundamental part of how modern airspace is controlled.

@JxckS

i would not want to be in the cross hairs of an unhinged right wing billionaire.

#elonmusk

@JxckS Elon’s idea of free speech is really whatever he believes is free speech at any given moment. Not what is actually free speech.
@JxckS he's just being a sore loser. I just tried to update my twitter profile and since it had my mastodon link it kept saying my description contained malware. Fucking malware! He's such a turd.

@JxckS receiving a frequency (other than designated public stations) is private in some countries, such as the UK.

This doesn't make Elon any less of an arsehole, though. Keep doing the good work!

@JxckS Back in 1995 living in residence during university, they tried to kick me out for "hacking" because I wrote a bit of C code instructing the Ethernet card in my PC to print out any data packets it received over the university network even if those packets were addressed to other PC's (instead of silently ignoring them). Back in those days, network switches were still super expensive, so they bought cheaper hubs, where every computer receives all data sent over the network. 🤷‍♂️
@JxckS @hubick 10 years ago before https was widespread you could dump Facebook messages with wireshark
@JxckS Elon is a SCAMMER. And I will TRACK DOWN THAT LITTLE MAGGOT FOREVER using my right to FREE SPEECH AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. ElonJet forever!
@JxckS Elon is turning into Trump with his SLAPP suits! He will pay the price!
@JxckS if I can use FlightRadar24 to track military aircraft (which anyone can), I don't think Elon has a leg to stand on for 'privacy' or 'security'
@JxckS By US law, the US airwaves belong to the public. The FCC only regulates them to ensure orderly usage.

@JxckS In some jurisdictions it is indeed illegal to listen to stuff that's broadcast in the clear.

In the UK for example it is, in theory, illegal for a pilot *who even has an RT licence* to listen to ATC communications whilst not in an aircraft. Something many private pilots do for training purposes. The number of prosecutions under this law is believed by the pilot community to be zero, ever.

@JxckS Key to retweet this and I'm posting it back on twitter. That should ingratiate me with the Rulon :)
@JxckS you inspired me to buy an antenna and start contributing
@JxckS Even before ADS-B, sites like FlightAware (and others) were using Mode S receivers at multiple sites + MLAT to work out aircraft positions.
@JxckS nice to know y’all do not care that some loon attacked his child. The difference between us is I would never endanger someone’s life or their families because I disagree with them
@lildave @JxckS musk lies constantly, so his claim that he was attacked is not necessarilly believable
https://mstdn.social/@iHeartHockey29/109525372499291051
@JxckS Hilarious that a guy who wants to mandate that people give him unfettered access to their location and background data on their phones has concerns about where the data his devices publicly transmit shows up.
@JxckS bro you are the hero that really pushes musk over the cliff as to revealing his true colors
@JxckS yeah man, I have flightradar 24, it's public information.
@JxckS Not to mention that if Elon truly wanted to fly in stealth mode, he has the resources to do it. He can fly other jets or use a jet service.
@JxckS Can confirm. Professional pilot in the family and we all use fight data all the time (super useful for timing airport runs).
@JxckS And just few days ago some people were cheering for him to release his own "starphone". Would the free speech absolutist’s smartphone allow downloading the flightradar24 app? What a joke.
@JxckS I admire your fortitude. You did nothing wrong and you are standing up to the biggest bully on Earth.
You are principled. I liked your replies to the insisting questions of this journalist at the end of yesterday's Twitter Spaces. A very powerful man asked you to fold, you are under intense pressure and scrutiny but you stood your ground. 👍💪 Respect to you Sir! :) Take care.

@JxckS David Sacks is claiming that you "wrote software to hack this privacy measure." He bases his claim on a stray tweet that you "could" write software to find the PIA ICAO.

You seem to indicate that you use only public data. Can you confirm that Sacks is wrong and that you never wrote such software?

Sacks says that the FAA "gives Elon a new identifier because of threats to his safety." However, it is my understanding that anyone can opt in if they want. Can you clarify?

@JxckS it is my understanding that Musk never availed himself of this service.
@JxckS Oh, if only you people owned a private jet, you would understand. Now, leave the man in peace, to decide on which bills he is to stiff his creditors, this month.
@JxckS how difficult isn’t to put in a delay? Thats all he cares about. Btw: what type of delay is he talking about? Like a „one week“ delay or longer? 🤡
@JxckS question: is there also a public registry where one can find that Elon’s jet is N628TS, or any other he might change to?

@JxckS

i apologize that i am disabusing you of this notion unless i am in error in which case please tell me

he said he’d lift that ban on doxxing, he used specific words.

he knows damn well that doxxing does not include:
-information literally being broadcast for anyone to pick up
-association of that information with a corporate entity

in theory it could be anybody behind that corporate veil

so it isn’t doxxing which is why he won’t reverse the ban.

deer funk boy is a sneaky fool.
