Do you think the New Zealand Government should set up and run its own #Mastodon server?

@jeremy_pm Surely they must be looking at this. How long can government agencies such Waka Kotahi and Metservice, stay on a site that welcomes far-right activists? It seems to go against this government's policy, especially the "Christchurch Call". Sure there will be issues, but the EU is setting up their own instances so it must be possible to establish a suitable policy and moderation framework for government owned instances.

@paulhellyer @jeremy_pm I seriously doubt it. There's no vendor to lead them by the hand.

And don't call me Shirley😉

@nzlemming @jeremy_pm I think there might be an opportunity for cloud-based providers to offer Mastodon-as-a-Service. They take care of all the back-end stuff, perhaps provide consultancy services on moderation, global privacy laws, etc., while the day-to-day running/posting is taken care of by the organisation. Not yet there yet, but I bet there are vendors out there giving it some thought.
@paulhellyer @jeremy_pm Yeah probably, but it won't be the NZ govt pushing them to do it. I was part of the e-govt project 2000-05 and I seriously don't think anything has changed since then in a significant way.
@jeremy_pm
Poll needs a fourth option: WHY ARE WE SHOUTING?
@DopeGhoti We have to SHOUT 'cause there's #NOALGORITHMS!
@jeremy_pm But the acoustics in here are fantastic. I can hear you from New Zealand all the way out here in the States!
@DopeGhoti good to know. I have recently learned to #Capitalise #HashTags to help screen readers for the visually impaired since joining the M-don. *Capitalise #NZSpelling
But thank you for pointing out the all caps shout questions. It is unnecessary. Either way it's a yeah, nah or yeah, nah, yeah.
@jeremy_pm
No worries, I was just being cheeky. Welcome to Mastodon and I hope you enjoy your stay! I know I have been.
@jeremy_pm
People on Mastodon voted overwhelmingly for More Mastodon! Success!

On a tangent away from government, it’s an interesting (idealistic!) thought experiment to think about NetSafe setting up a safe instance on behalf of NZers.

@NotJustDNA @jeremy_pm At this time, NetSafe is in transition and having to re-establish turst with users.

Also, I don't think it's the appropriate place to do this from. And how are you going to enforce it being only for NZers? (That is what you're saying, I think) Would we have to front up with a passport to get registered? How would you check that registrants were telling the truth.

The "Someone should do this" reasoning is specious for most things. Where there is a need, function follows.

@nzlemming @NotJustDNA Why would it have to be only for NZers? I can follow any govt dept on the German govt mastodon instances should I be interested in doing so. I'm thinking people are failing to understand how the #Fediverse functions.
@nzlemming @NotJustDNA Sorry Mark, I missed the reference to your response ie being run by Netsafe.
@jeremy_pm @NotJustDNA I think you are correct. I was merely following the experimental method of asking questions 😉

@NotJustDNA @jeremy_pm Also, how would it be safe? What do you mean by "safe"? Who decides what is safe and what is not? What is the penalty for lying, or being unsafe? Death seems a little severe, but some countries would go for it. But arrests? We already have a law about misusing computers to harass or defame. Where does unsafety fit into that?

I mean, if you're having a thought experiment, put some thought into it, man! Harrumph!.

@jeremy_pm if they do, I can toot at Hipkins and be ignored then complain to the ombudsman who will make Hipkins reply to me here, just like I did on twitter lol
