House approves removal of bust of Supreme Court justice who wrote Dred Scott decision, protecting slavery

The measure replaces the bust of former Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney with late Justice Thurgood Marshall.

CBS News
@black_intellect I wish they’d remove his whole statue and not just his boobs, but I guess we have to live with half measures.

@black_intellect He had a name, you know.
Roger Taney.
And he wasn't "a justice."
He was the chief justice.

Now get that thing out of there.

@black_intellect Replaced with Thurgood Marshall. Passed by voice vote, man I wish they would have had their votes on record instead.
@black_intellect should have happened decades ago.
@black_intellect I hope that this means that there will never be statuary of Alito (or Thomas and the others in the Dobbs majority) in the Capital (or SCOTUS) building.

@karlauerbach @black_intellect We'll have to make sure that never happens.

Maybe we should create a Traitors Park where we can have statues of people like Alito, Robert E. Lee, Benedict Arnold, Klaus Fuchs, and others of that ilk.

@shuttersparks @black_intellect - I have a suggestion for who's statute we can put in an old fashioned outhouse in that park, its some guy who overdecorates in NYC and Palm Beach.
@karlauerbach @black_intellect Ahh, yes. Overdecorates. I know who you're referring to.
@black_intellect sometimes people look like who they are, and it's not hard to tell just by viewing the statue that he's a ghoul
@black_intellect I disagree with that move. Better to educate, not hide history. We should learn and understand our mistakes.
@MonarchNursery @black_intellect But a statue is a tribute. We should study and learn from it but not revere it. His legacy of oppression is well documented. He doesn’t deserve a monument.
@jlawhead @black_intellect If people MUST interpret the statues as tributes, then get rid of all of them. Being selective about history is part of what’s hindering us from moving away from racism. This picking and choosing from history is misleading no matter what’s chosen to present.
@MonarchNursery @black_intellect World War II is a significant part of our history. We don’t require statues of Hitler to know that. That’s not cherry picking either.
@jlawhead @black_intellect We are talking about the Capitol of the US and a hall of Chief Justices. It’s a historical presentation, or should be, not a glorification of flawed individuals. All of the Chief Justices should be presented with educational signage or none.
@MonarchNursery @black_intellect if it has to be absolutist, all-or-nothing, then I vote none.
@jlawhead @black_intellect Fine. Now let’s address presidents’ portraits. Trump is hanging there (or will…I haven’t paid attention). I’m pretty unhappy about that.
@black_intellect now can we remove the living people who work to that end?
