In the decade since Sandy Hook, gun violence has become the leading cause of death for American children; more than 25,000 kids have been killed. No other industrialized country comes close to the U.S. rate.

How much longer will Congress let this carnage continue?
@rbreich until they no longer profit from it.
@rbreich Until someone assassinates the President.
Five people shot, including Republican congressman, at baseball practice

On June 14, 2017, a gunman walked onto a baseball field at Eugene Simpson Park in Alexandria, Virginia, opening fire on politicians and wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and four others. The representatives had been practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity. James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man, asked a passing […]

HISTORY

@pburke46 @rbreich

Absolutely disgraceful in a country that considers itself a First World Nation. The last time US society had open massacres and political violence occurred in the years preceding the US Civil War.

Sadly, another one looms on the horizon. 😔

@LaNegresseCanadienne @rbreich Only if it’s a Republican president that is assassinated. And perhaps not even then.

@bitbear @rbreich

President McKinley was the last Republican who met an ignominious fate. 😓

@LaNegresseCanadienne @rbreich Yeah, so long time ago the Republican party might have been considered the progressive one of the two. So let me rephrase:

Gun laws will only be made stricter once a conservative president gets shot dead. And perhaps not even then.

@bitbear @rbreich

In the 120 years since the demise of President McKinley, not even so called Progressives from either political party staved off gun violence.

@rbreich
How long?
As long as they keep making money off of the sales of rapid-fire automatic weapons and their ammunition.
@liroso @rbreich the problem is the constitution. Nothing will change when it comes to guns untill the 2nd amendment is repealed.
@TheBigR @rbreich
And that won't change until their financial interest is eliminated.

@liroso @rbreich Fire arms manufactures are a symptom, not the cause. The cause is quite frankly, people in this country own guns, last year was 47%. The other problem more then 80% want the 2nd amendment to remain.

untill thst changes, nothing else will.

@rbreich you have to change the constitution.
@rbreich No amount of human life is worth even one money. Money is the only thing that matters. Some day, when money is the only thing left on the planet, it will sit and rot until it too, is gone.
@rbreich The carnage will continue until every member of the GOP has been voted out.
@rbreich until it’s not profitable for them anymore
@rbreich Congress will never run out of rotating villains to keep the status quo while pretending to want to do the right thing
@rbreich They make up for it by making it more difficult to avoid getting pregnant or ending unwanted pregnancies.
@rbreich for as long as it is profitable to the lobbies that pay them their real salary, it seems.
@rbreich it won’t end because carnage is an American value

@rbreich This carnage will continue until the political donors want it changed.

My suspicion is that more donors will want gun laws changed if some nut shoots up a private school for rich kids.

As long as it's just public schools getting shot up, the donors don't seem to care enough to spend the money to change the laws.

@grumble209 @rbreich

Yeah, if black kids shot up private schools for the rich kids or if people started taking shots at Republicans and their families, something might change.

(I don't condone or encourage violence)

@rbreich the travesty is that the cost to society by the tragic loss of lives due gun violence is orders of magnitudes higher than all the profits of the gun industry combined.
@rbreich Congress will continue to let the carnage continue until the bribes cease.

@rbreich "How much longer will Congress let this carnage continue?"

Sadly I think this is a rhetorical question, at this point.

@rbreich If I had to guess, about 15-20 more years.

Beyond that, the demographics don't look good; too many people moving into urban environments which tend to select against social conservatism.

@rbreich I sure wish it was “none of us would be the same”.
Too many legislators went on business as usual on that very day. Those who claim to be all about the sanctity of life. Currently, all bluster about “protecting the children”, but not from maniacs firing waves of bullets.
@rbreich I hope we can get reasonable gun control and background checks more universal, but have you also talked with leftist gun groups like the Socialist Rifle Association and John Brown Gun Club? They're more loose and not organized like right wing militias or the NRA, but they could have a lot of helpful input on accommodations for people and marginalized groups like LGBT+ who need guns for protection until we can get real police reform
@rbreich this might go against the grain but your brain might not handle the logic. Until gun laws are followed by criminals. Until security systems are in place at every school and the culture needs to change. Mental health is addressed.
@Theehermit @rbreich or you could just ban the guns. Much simpler.
@stooovie @rbreich that doesn’t stop people honestly. Explain why Venezuela has the highest murder rate per capital but all guns are banned
@rbreich if it was the airline industry responsible for that many deaths we might expect payouts of a few million in compensation each. Add to that the cost that society is already paying to respond to, investigate, and treat other victims who were injured or mentally traumatized - quite probably for life. Let's say $10M per actual death. Send a $250B fine to the US arms industry and see them think again about what they do like the tobacco industry.

@rbreich

"The US leads the developed world in gun deaths, with about 12 gun-related deaths per 100,000 people, according to data collected from GunPolicy.org. Not coincidentally, the country also has a lot more guns. For every 100 Americans, the US has 120 guns.

There are many extenuating circumstances that lead to gun deaths in the US.

Let’s start with the easy one: guns."

How the number of guns compares to gun deaths in the US

The US has lots of gun violence. It also has lots of guns.

These Are the U.S. Senators Who Have Taken the Most Money from the NRA

Which politicians take the most donations from the National Rifle Association? We look at the group's influence in the American gun debate.

Katie Couric Media
@rbreich until their own children are killed
@rbreich
The amount of $$ bilked from Americans by the #NRAterrorists using fear and 2A. Unfathomable.
@rbreich I don’t feel they will be able to stop this gun violence. It’s too late.
@rbreich
As long as they get funded by NRA and gun fanatics.
@rbreich For as long as they're being paid to.
