Berlin is considering the possibility of a car-free area larger than Manhattan. The citizen-driven plan would create the largest car-free area in a city anywhere in the world.

@BrentToderian Brent, Berlin is not considering this at all. The city just got rid of a 500m temporary car-free strip https://taz.de/Autofreie-Berliner-Friedrichstrasse/!5890668/. The mayor is a known car lover; Berlin is currently building a highway through the area your report says might become carfree https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesautobahn_100. Maybe see my videos. By law, German cities cannot even lower the speed limit to 30 km/h https://www.agora-verkehrswende.de/veroeffentlichungen/kommunen-fuer-tempo-30/.
Autofreie Berliner Friedrichstraße: Fünfhundert Meter Streit

In der Friedrichstraße finden Verkehrsberuhigung nicht alle gut. Bald kehren die Autos zurück. Doch die nächste Sperrung ist schon geplant.

Yes the mayor a social democrat and the whole berlin party are very pro car. It is very difficult to even get the tiniest improvements for cycling infrastructure despite there is a law in place that actually should guarantee safe biking and walking infrastructure in the city called the Mobilitätsgesetzt.
