By this logic every American app should be banned by every other country, and you can bet a few will welcome the excuse.

Sen. Marco Rubio announced bipartisan legislation Tuesday to ban TikTok in the U.S., citing national security concerns that the app—owned by Chinese firm ByteDance—could be used to spy on Americans, following a surge of states banning the app from government devices.

@normative my wife joined TikTok yesterday and I joked that this signaled the end of TikTok. Now I have proof.
@normative its kinda funny how a bureaucracy as slow as the eu has managed to create laws on data sovereignty faster than America could. Right now usgov can't even get tiktok to host in America
@normative id maybe switch countries, i am def addicted to tiktok
@normative Feels like the horse is long outta the “spy on Americans” barn, imo. But everybody loves a good villain, I guess.

@normative Through their insidious TikTok spying, the Chinese might well steal American advances in the field of... (checks TikTok) 14 year olds dancing stupidly.

This must be prevented at all costs! When the space aliens arrive and promise to grant the secrets of free energy and eternal life to the winner of the Big Dance-Off, we do NOT want to lose to the Chinese!

@normative Which app doesn't spy on everyone using it?
@normative Yep, that's pretty much why the apps exist
@normative don't falsely equate America and China.
@normative
I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I do think that Tik Tok is a danger. I, like everyone in Taiwan, don't trust the Chinese government, especially now. But to be agreeing with Marco Rubio on ANYTHING? This scares me.
@therealjimlove TikTok should obviously not be on the personal device of anyone with a security clearance, and every agency has already issued that rule. The rest of us can make our own call about the risks.
@normative
Good point. I also acknowledge your other post where you note that other countries might take a Tik Tok ban as the rationale for blocking US tech. I'm still thinking this through and this is food for thought. Thank you.
@normative
politicians tend to ignore the law of unintended consequences
@normative
Rather than banning, the US should ask for reciprocity with China: "you allow Facebook, Twitter, etc and we allow TikTok".
@normative Does any legislation co-sponsored by Marco Rubio have a healthy serving of hypocrisy baked in? Abso-effin-lutely! Is PRC access to TikTok data still a serious potential #natsec risk? Also abso-effin-lutely.
