SavvyGoblinI was in the "just mod 5e" camp for a long time. Until I played two games: Blades in the Dark & Dungeon Crawl Classics.
Both made me realize I could actually achieve the kinds of stories and genre I wanted to play in without an unrecognizable amount of modification. If your only TTRPG experience has been 5E D&D, I urge you to give a few other games a try. You just might love them.
