Someone asked me if it was worth losing a quarter million followers on Twitter by no longer posting original content.

Yes.

Besides the fact that I will never jeopardize my mental health for a social media account, it's a safety issue.

Two years ago, the FBI made an arrest after a serious threat was made against my family on Twitter. I no longer believe Twitter would assist an investigation if that occurred again.

I'm not feeding into that platform because of the hate it is fostering.

@RedTRaccoon I followed you on Twitter. It's nice to see you here!
@michellepostoncombs @RedTRaccoon Conversely, I NEVER followed you on Twitter, so Mastodon actually helped you GAIN at least one follower!
@RedTRaccoon I left behind 13k followers. It was tough, it included some good online friends who for whatever reason don't seem ready to leave, but I will no longer feed the beast.
@Tweetfiction @RedTRaccoon I had 20k, and miss some accounts. I couldn’t stand the anger I was feeling every time I opened that app.
@Tweetfiction @RedTRaccoon thanks for choosing to leave, glad to find you here. I left 5k behind and I'm still looking to reconnect with them. πŸ’™
@Ginafla @RedTRaccoon have you used movetodon.org? It will search your Twitter followers for any mastodon accounts and follow them automatically. It was very easy!
@Tweetfiction I might give that a try, thanks!
@Tweetfiction @RedTRaccoon
I left 8k on this last twit acct. over 4 accounts and one they killed had 15K.. Close to 40K in 7 years. I was continually on guard.
@RedTRaccoon Very good decision. Respect your integrity.
@RedTRaccoon Thank you for expressing so succinctly the jeopardy some of us experience on that platform.
@RedTRaccoon I’m with you. My account is locked with two-factor authentication on so no one steals my handle.
@RedTRaccoon
Thx for making that decision. I know it was a tough one. So very glad to have you here in the non Elmo fedi-sphere. πŸ‘πŸ»
@RedTRaccoon I remember that. I agree about whether they’d do anything now. I don’t think anybody is safe there.
@RedTRaccoon not to mention the quality of the interaction on Twitter just isn't any good. I get better conversations on Instagram and that says A LOT.
@RedTRaccoon I used to follow you on Twitter and I’m thrilled you’re here now. I’m so sorry you had to endure threats IRL and you’re right, the current twitter would not only NOT support you but would actually make things worse.
@RedTRaccoon I think you made the right decision. I have went back on occasion, probably due to fomo and recognized immediately why I left and how it has become more toxic and less safe.
@RedTRaccoon wow what a terrible experience. Kudos for making the important life changes.

@RedTRaccoon

I absolutely agree. I've been here for a few weeks now and not once have I gone off on an angry rant like it did daily & often multiple times daily on Twitter!

@RedTRaccoon You are a smart dude... because that is all correct
@RedTRaccoon, followed you there, following here. Nice to see you.
@RedTRaccoon
100% agree. I read a few comments that literally made me sick, and that was enough. I can't help that people think like that, and I can't help that other people like to peek into that sickness, but damn if I am going to bathe in their filth.
@RedTRaccoon
Good for you. And your family. Many have left permanently. I did, the day chief twit announced his intent to buy.
Welcome to a different social experience. You just have to find the right instance for your feed.
And you might think to close your bird site account. Some on Mastodon block anyone feeding that @ and #.
@RedTRaccoon I just made my way over here. Less stress and so tired of being attacked!

@RedTRaccoon

That is the sane and ethical move.

Staying there requires mental gymnastics that do not face reality.

This article quotes some accounts many of us followed, and their decision, based on their follower counts, is disappointing.

Why liberal Washington can’t quit Twitter

Washington was one of the first places to grasp the potential power of Twitter and it may be one of the last places to abandon it.

NBC News

@KFClinton @RedTRaccoon

But not overly surprising that people get wrapped up in the sound of their own gears turning and lose the plot.

What is happening at the blue bird of fascism site is a micro replay of what happened to the Repulikkkan Party and Middle America.

What's frightening is that a lot of these folks were the ones shouting then "No, can't you see if you stay with Nazis, you can't win. You'll become them."

Now? It's them.
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.

@statmonkey I expected far more from Vindman and it was disappointing to read. The quotes basically all say, in other words, I won't give up my followers for ego reasons so I am lying to myself to cope with staying here.

He says Elmo is a β€œpurveyor of hate and division” but he stays for his own personal celebrity boost there.

@KFClinton I would insert a jaded bit of sarcasm here but I think that's pretty rich given his whole claim to fame was selfless government servant who couldn't be bought.

@RedTRaccoon I may not have had the same numbers, OK not even close, however the perspective is spot on! I cannot stay where misogyny, hate speech and lies are normalized!πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I have something called values; where integrity and respecting others is absolutely important. From my perspective, staying and fighting is pointless when your words are muted and discounted.

@RedTRaccoon It’s a pleasure to see you here. As a long time follower/followee on Twitter it’s difficult to lose the connections I’ve had w/my friends & family there. You are absolutely correct when you say it’s not worth the price you pay in terms of your MH, or your safety for that matter. Happy I found you here. πŸ€—
@RedTRaccoon I'm trying but f all is happening for me here.
@RedTRaccoon Welcome. I followed you there. I had been on the bird site for several years when 2016 happened. Election night, when TV called it for TFG, I went underground for a few months and then went back under a nom de guerre. I stayed around until I started spending all my time in Twitmo. Again, I deleted my account for a few months and went back again under my real name. I quit four days before the sale became final. I'm here to stay until I'm not. And yes, this is my real name.
@RedTRaccoon So happy to find you here. I followed you on the bird site but I’m trying to spend more time here.
@RedTRaccoon I'm sorry that you had to deal with that. Unfortunately these kind of threats will become more frequent in the coming months. Especially with Musk's latest move.
@RedTRaccoon absolutely agree. Not worth the mental anguish and certainly not the threats.
@RedTRaccoon Bravo, Ted. I admire your integrity.
@RedTRaccoon Absolutely the correct call. One has only to see the absurdity and stupidity of the tweet Musk sent out soon after attack on Mr Pelosi to know exactly how little he cares about such investigations.
@RedTRaccoon πŸ—£οΈπŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

@RedTRaccoon my account wasn’t nearly as big as your account, but finding a new place was the only option.

My only regret was that I couldn’t get people to migrate with me.

I had to let go of a lot of relationships I had steadily built.

I’m still glad I left.

It was like being in an abusive relationship, especially now that we see other platforms don’t tolerate the toxic trolls.

@RedTRaccoon

And unfortunately its too late to _not_ talk about it, because society let billionaires run unchecked and they have turned Twitter into an existential threat.

@RedTRaccoon I no longer felt safe on the bird site
@RedTRaccoon following you here! πŸ‘
@RedTRaccoon
I left 16.000 behind. I was suspended because I told the truth about Matt Gaetz?
