The Jisho.org entry has the bit about craving cigarettes, which is the definition I first heard that expression. There was some pop singer (Masaharu Fukuyama, I think?) who'd quit smoking and went on to promote chewing gum to soothe the mouth loneliness of not having a cigarette.

@vitruvianmeeple @BlippyTheWonderSlug Could be, yes 🤔 it happens to me when I'm stressed, or have sensory overload. Then I tend to turn inwards, but also feel full, like I can't stomach anything on top of that. So instead of my mouth needing company, it needs rest (I still need to eat though, I've got mass gainer for those moments)
