The Continuity of Splines is now on YouTube!!

it has been a year in the making, goodness ;-;🎉 I hope you'll like it ❤

@acegikmo What a journey! Well done.
@acegikmo I’ve only watched the first three minutes of this and it’s already next level amazing

@seb_ly @acegikmo
I watched to the end yesterday

Somehow I feel that the small topic on radians is gonna yield a 2 hour deep-dive video

@acegikmo woooooooooo!!! Congrats. 🎉🎊🍾
@acegikmo The content of your YT is amazing, will definitely subscribe
@acegikmo There is quite a bit inside this video that is directly useful for my hobby programming. So thank you for sticking to it and making this video. I already enjoyed your documentation on social platforms of this work during the year. Bezier curves are already awesome and this opens up so much further than just that.😍
@acegikmo only watched the first 10 minutes so far… but like, it’s already clicked very well on me, it’s so well narrated, I got the grasp of it all right away with the absolutely gorg visuals, and I can already feel the details you made the intro with and why it all looks like it does and??????????? 💗
@acegikmo oh my goodness, incredible! Thank you for making this 🙏
@acegikmo Just watched this and it was wonderful! I can really see how deep the rabbithole was and how carefully focused this had to be - I'm glad you found a good set of things to cover, and extremely well!
@acegikmo
What an incredible video! 😍 Absolutely stunned by how accessibility and depth. Its got my gears turning now about how I could improve some of the splines I've been using...
@acegikmo This is lovely! Do you have a making of?
@BlinkPopShift not really, but I did stream a lot of the development on twitch!
@acegikmo this is incredible. If I were still TAing undergrad graphics students this would just replace my lecture on splines completely
@acegikmo why yes, the wedge product producing a bivector IS a whole 'nother video...
@acegikmo Fully watched it now, great video. Long diversion into continuity that was deeper than I ever went, so TIL. Thank you.
@acegikmo started the introduction tonight and can’t wait to watch the rest of the weekend!! Looks amazing!!!!!!!
@acegikmo An absolutely lovely deep dive. The animations are sublime. Not only elegant, beautiful, but essential for understanding the concepts for the non-mathematicians. Wow.
@acegikmo fantastic video! i learned a lot! thanks!
@acegikmo Once again: This is absolutely amazing, I don't think I've ever seen anything this well presented, both visually, in content, and in structure.
@acegikmo this is marvelous, thank you for putting it together so clearly!
@acegikmo my brain liked this video so much that last night I dreamt about explaining splines to someone else. "sure it's a little weird not being able to directly plot the key frame locations, but b-splines guarantee that you won't have any instantaneous acceleration in your camera movements which is really important for a natural feeling"

@acegikmo
This is a STUNNING example of math (?) communication.

You should be immensely proud of yourself.

Now I want to do something fun with splines haha.

@acegikmo I really like your content. Keep doing it.

@acegikmo
I'm 23 minutes in.
This is a masterful work.

I learned some basics of this in my graphics course in 1990. And despite being at the end of a math/CS degree a lot of the intuition just didn't sink in for me.

This is just masterful.
Wonderful!

@acegikmo Amazing video!

I was hoping it would build up to Spiro Splines (https://tucsonlabs.com/2010/08/05/using-spiro-splines-in-inkscape/). I wonder why it didn’t? They have interesting continuity properties, similar to B-splines, but the lines go through the control points.

Using spiro splines in Inkscape – Tucson Labs

@steadicat because they get significantly more complex, and the buildup required to get there was way beyond the scope of this video

@acegikmo I took this journey a while back but I *definitely* didn't go as deep as you did. Even just finding all this material and these visualizations, let alone making and animating all of them: this is so much... I can't even... my hat's off to you.

(I think the only thing in your epilog that I did attempt was designing a C2 continuous Catmull-Rom-like spline: when you said "it just doesn't look good" I was like "Yes! What's WITH that? It's not fair!")

@acegikmo This is a FANTASTIC video!!! Thanks so much for making it!
@acegikmo I am going to enjoy all 1 hour, 13 minutes and 49 seconds of these beautifully animated explanations
@acegikmo 22:48 "As you can see, it yeets off to f'ing wherever." I laughed out loud!
@acegikmo by the way - the reflections part in G continuity section - is that done analytically in a shader, or did you (gasp) use raytracing shaders there?

@aras analytically in the shader!

The mesh was basically just a tessellated quad strip, using the u-coordinate as the parameter value in the curve segment

that way I can explicitly calculate normals in the frag shader, instead of using the, you know, G1 continuous, vertex normals (gross~)

@acegikmo @aras
That was a good explanation for my puzzlement when I look at the glossy rounded chamfer of the cap on my deodorant spray can, I see a discontinuity yet cannot feel it with my finger
@acegikmo the visual design, general aesthetic, intuitions given, and gradual build-up are just great in both this video and the previous one on bezier curves.
These have easily been the best resource on bezier curves and splines to me. Thank you so much for making them!
I hope you recover from the burnout and can avoid another in the future
@acegikmo Ohhh nice! I love people who make longer videos on YouTube. I'll watch this on my TV tonight!
@acegikmo lol holy fuck I am dead. this video is amazing.
@acegikmo
Math porn.
And the color scheme is so nice <3
@acegikmo you clearly have a gift when it comes to math, visualization and communication! amazing job :)
@acegikmo One hour and 13 minutes of eye candy, with amazing explanations. I love it!
@acegikmo
I appreciate every single second of the video. Including the post-video thoughts, some of which resonate with me a lot (I got stuck at my FIRST ever video for months for similar reasons). It turned out perfect, beautiful, informative, educational, I LOVE IT.
Say hi to the cats <3. My cats say hello.
@ikari thank you, I'm glad you like it! all the cats are napping now though~

@acegikmo It proves it was time well spent and you shouldn't ever rush :)

You're able to explain complex (more complex than I thought so far :D) ideas in a very approachable way with 🌟MESMERIZING✨ visualizations.

@acegikmo I just started watching it... I am mesmerized! The amount of effort that you put into this is staggering! Can't wait to see the rest of it! Congrats and THANK YOU! :D
@acegikmo this is a very well made video 👍 🤩 the effort clearly shows
@acegikmo watching this makes me feel a lot smarter *and* a lot stupider.
@acegikmo Wow. This is absolutely beautiful. Such wonderfully clear explanations with stunning visuals.
@acegikmo
By far the best explanation for splines I've come across! Your work is fantastic!

@acegikmo I honestly thought I knew enough about curves, and put the video on for background noise, as a refresher, expecting something very light (it's a hour long, how dense it could be?).
After a few minutes I was totally hooked, and learned a lot of things I haven't even heard about before, like geometric continuity.

Great video, thank you for the hard work, and I'll be looking forward to learn even more!

@nicemicro thank you! I'm glad you liked it <3
@acegikmo This is amazing, thank you. I am only 10 minutes in but I already love it.

@acegikmo "as you can see, it yeets off to fucking wherever-"

thank you for making me belly laugh, oh my god

22 minutes of very calm and collected explanation and then this comes out, and its totally on point, oh my god

@acegikmo This is really spectacular.
@roblach thank you! glad you like it

Absolutely beautiful!

As you mention at the end, you could have done a video series instead to release pressure in between portions. Regardless, your video is gold !
