@acegikmo
This is a STUNNING example of math (?) communication.
You should be immensely proud of yourself.
Now I want to do something fun with splines haha.
@acegikmo
I'm 23 minutes in.
This is a masterful work.
I learned some basics of this in my graphics course in 1990. And despite being at the end of a math/CS degree a lot of the intuition just didn't sink in for me.
This is just masterful.
Wonderful!
@acegikmo Amazing video!
I was hoping it would build up to Spiro Splines (https://tucsonlabs.com/2010/08/05/using-spiro-splines-in-inkscape/). I wonder why it didn’t? They have interesting continuity properties, similar to B-splines, but the lines go through the control points.
@acegikmo I took this journey a while back but I *definitely* didn't go as deep as you did. Even just finding all this material and these visualizations, let alone making and animating all of them: this is so much... I can't even... my hat's off to you.
(I think the only thing in your epilog that I did attempt was designing a C2 continuous Catmull-Rom-like spline: when you said "it just doesn't look good" I was like "Yes! What's WITH that? It's not fair!")
@aras analytically in the shader!
The mesh was basically just a tessellated quad strip, using the u-coordinate as the parameter value in the curve segment
that way I can explicitly calculate normals in the frag shader, instead of using the, you know, G1 continuous, vertex normals (gross~)
@acegikmo I honestly thought I knew enough about curves, and put the video on for background noise, as a refresher, expecting something very light (it's a hour long, how dense it could be?).
After a few minutes I was totally hooked, and learned a lot of things I haven't even heard about before, like geometric continuity.
Great video, thank you for the hard work, and I'll be looking forward to learn even more!
@acegikmo "as you can see, it yeets off to fucking wherever-"
thank you for making me belly laugh, oh my god
22 minutes of very calm and collected explanation and then this comes out, and its totally on point, oh my god
Absolutely beautiful!
As you mention at the end, you could have done a video series instead to release pressure in between portions. Regardless, your video is gold !
