A friend of mine who has wired his living space to only use Internet connected lightbulbs told me he had to spend all night in the dark last night when his Internet went down. Yes, that made me laugh very loudly. #IoT #Oops #lightbulbs
@ai6yr LoL. Usually you can just manually turn the lightswitch off, then back on for manual activation. But yeah, smart lights can be a pain. We have middle-of-the-night power outs here on occasion. And when power returns, ALL the smart lights turn on. Usually at 3am.

@orci @ai6yr I made the mistake once of resetting my Hue hub (when I thought it was merely rebooting it.) It lost all of it's programming.

I spent 8 hours tracking down each light, figuring out the names and what rooms they were in, and re-establishing all of the routines/automations.

But... they're so convenient. 😂

@ai6yr
Oh would he have fun down here since "net failure" is an almost daily occurrence down here.
@ai6yr
I did smart lights in my home office. A couple weeks ago my internet and intranet went down... At first I thought it was just the dumb switch under my desk (very dark space), but I couldn't turn the lights on and I had taped over the switch lights a long time ago. Didn't realize it was xfinity had comcasted my internet until I pulled my phone out to use as a flashlight.
😂
@ai6yr 😂 😂 Oh noooo that sucks, but still funny!
@ai6yr reminds me of the part in Mr. Robot where they hack this lady's smart home and make it do weird shit until she leaves so they can use her house for shenanigans
@ai6yr if only he had a flashlight or two as backup.
@ai6yr see, this is another reason I really really don't want anything that requires an internet connection to function... companies come and go, i want to have an edge control device, let my stuff on the network talk to that, behind firewalls! If i choose to let that device talk to a web site or a device, car, whatever, it's a choice not by demand or ransom. Brick by forced update shouldn't exist
@AG0NY Exactly. I mean, Tesla could brick your car (or give anyone access to the video camers) if the Melon Husk dude doesn't like you, which is stupid.
@ai6yr or like happened recently, an iot company just disappears, and took down their servers... Poof! Entire ecosystem gone, bricked... Temporary until people figured out workarounds, but completely the wrong direction imho
@AG0NY Yep, agree. Stuff that bricks when a company decides to brick it (or goes out of business) is a no-no for me. Unless you just want to assume it will be disposable.
Hands-on: Hyundai, Kia's V2L feature can literally save your bacon in a power outage

Hyundai's new E-GMP EVs can output power to run tools, gadgets or even appliances during power outages and emergencies.
