Hey guess what-- I'm going to tell you about the bug spray I use on my plants. I don't like neem oil and I'm too poor to buy enough to try to like it. I don't want to kill my beneficials if I have a choice. I need something weaker that I can spot apply.

2 Parts isopropyl alcohol (70%, 90%, 99%, whatever. I've used them all. I'm not your dad and won't tell you what to do)
4-5 parts water
A bloop of soap. Potentially a glug all the way up to a dollop depending on the size of the batch you're making.

Spray it on the bugs that have the AUDACITY to attempt existing somewhere that you haven't given them permission to. I let it sit for like 5 minutes. Maybe there's no reason to do that but I just can't manage to care enough to look into it. Rinse it off (ESPECIALLY if you're doing this on leafy greens).

The soap breaks the surface tension of the water which is already pretty weak thanks to the alcohol. This means that the bugs sink into the water. This also means that the water will flow directly into the opening on their thorax through which the bugs passively respire. Getting water and alcohol in the breathy-hole isn't great for them.

I like this method because I've never seen a mixture this (relatively) dilute damage any of my plants. The alcohol makes the substance evaporate faster so, even if it doesn't get rinsed off, it doesn't stick around long.

You can replace the alcohol with white or apple cider vinegar but BE WARNED that it won't evaporate as fast and could potentially disrupt osmotic pressure enough to makes your plants all fucked up. It's handy in a pinch, though.

Good luck and godspeed, you beautiful fucker.

@brad @owen does this, but I don't think he uses isopropyl, I think he just uses soap, water, and a drop of some essential oil.

He leaves it sit for 5-10 mins then rinses it off.

@scott @brad Oh, thanks for tagging me in. I had no idea iso was safe to use on plants, but clearly, if yours are fine then it must be (in moderation).

I'll post my recipe after some more commentary!

@scott @brad

Warning: I tend to mix it too strong soapwise and burn the tips of my leaves. Wrinkled leaves are a common reaction too; I take it like a grimace--the plant can still use it, but that was definitely way too much soap. This stuff, I leave on til dry (five minutes, like you) and then rinse it all off from the top with my watering spray bottle. It's fine for the plants to drink, as far as I can tell, idk. I don't rinse it outta the soil haha

@scott @brad Bug Annihilator Recipe

-1L misting bottle
-dish soap, drops to a glug (I glug it, caveat emptor)
-essential oils*

I mean, you know what to do. I put in the soap and oils first, just a few drops of oils is all you usually need. Then the water so it mixes for me as it's added bc I'm a lazy engineer. Sniff to make sure it's pungent, then mist it all over the plants top-down or just spot apply to affected areas. Enjoy watching your enemies melt. RINSE AFTER!!!

@scott @brad Asterisk on essential oils

So bugs hate basically all of the terpenes and such, they're very sensitive to them and most of them were invented BY plants to discourage bugs. The ones I use right now bc they're useful for bug-repellant spray as well as plant treatment are *citronella* and *pennyroyal*, both of which are good mosquito repellants, and also pennyroyal is REALLY good for repelling ticks, which are bad where we live.

@scott @brad It's an interesting combination, not bad but definitely in the "hippie bug repellent" sphere of things. At this point it's down to whether you prefer hippie bug repellent smell or hospital smell on your plants, lmfao. Well, essential oils aren't cheap either. Mine were gifts from my hippie mom, so I got lucky and used what was available.

Honestly it's nice to see a more accessible (and less stinky!) recipe!! Hell yeah, Brad!

@scott @brad OH AND ONE MORE THING

@scott @brad All essential oils can be dangerous in large-enough amounts, but especially pennyroyal, in smaller-than-usual amounts. I don't usually wear gloves when I mix this, BUT I REALLY SHOULD, and anyone mixing essential oils ought to take precautions. Just cuz that one time I soaked my hand in pennyroyal oil didn't kill ME doesn't mean it can't kill YOU! Allergic reactions are no joke!

Happy planting!!
