After a little tinkering with ChatGPT, I have a solid idea of what a software engineering job will look like in the near future:
9:00 AM: arrive at desk, turn on computer, get coffee
9:15: return to computer and see it’s crashed on boot
9:30: after multiple unsuccessful reboot attempts, try recovery mode
10:30: look for install media
11:30: attempt to pacify boss while googling “UEFI MBR error 0xc000000e”
12:30: drop tiny screw in computer while everyone else goes to lunch
3 PM: weep
See if you can guess what I spent several hours dealing with today

AND JUST NOW IT RANDOMLY STARTED WORKING AND I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHY

the point is that ChatGPT may do some amazing things but it is also terrible, and it’s terrible for a reason more fundamental than any concerns about AI taking jobs or stealing other people’s creations or manifesting all of the internet’s awful biases in one tightly-packaged model.
It’s terrible because IT’S STILL SOFTWARE and ALL SOFTWARE IS TERRIBLE* and ALL COMPUTERS ARE TERRIBLE
