Having the ability and means to do multiple things well is not nearly as accepted in modern society as is being an expert in 1 field of speciality. Perhaps it's time we looked at the value of people and their ability to multi-learn many valuable interests in moderation, other than only valuing the ones who have excelled in a singular subject.

@cammac

YES!! Thank you! I have been fiercely anti-specialist my whole life (to the point of doing a thesis on it) and while I stand by that, it's made navigating society and especially careers and employment much more difficult than if I just picked one thing to specialize in like everyone wanted me to. I remember my voice teacher explicitly telling me I'd never succeed as a singer because I cared too much about too many other things. How is caring about lots of things a negative??

@autisticompulsive @cammac Right, see my bio.

When I was hiring some software developers, I specifically told the recruiter that if a person described themselves as "a #python coder" or "a #java #engineer" or whatever, I wasn't interested. I want someone who can think outside of a box.

Recruiter had no idea what I was talking about. And that was still all within the narrow field of software engineering!

#ADHD, apparently, although I agree that "knows more than one thing" is not a disability.
