I should have realized this could happen but 🤯
#ChatGPT hallucinates a working(?) virtual machine that can access a made up internet

Building A Virtual Machine inside ChatGPT

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have heard of this new ChatGPT assistant made by OpenAI. Did you know, that you can run a whole virtual machine inside of ChatGPT?

👆 #ChatGPT hallucinates using the lynx browser to navigate to OpenAI’s website and posting a JSON query to Assistant and receiving an answer.

So of course ChatGPT can hallucinate asking an imaginary Assistant to pretend to be a virtual machine… 🐢🐢🐢🐢 all the way down

Get #ChatGPT to hallucinate a virtual machine, then play ASCII Tetris https://twitter.com/zehavoc/status/1599193444043268096
Djamé.. on Twitter

“So I'm inside that creepy #ChatGPT "virtual machine" and i'm trying to make it play tetris. on the right window, it made the L move from right to left and after a T appears and started to scroll down (repeated for 25 lines). People can say what they want, that thing is amazing.”

@Riedl the virtual machine thing is cool, actually shows it remembers things from turn to turn, guess it just took the internet a few more days to figure out what to do with dialog
@Riedl really mind blowing 🤯
@Riedl that is just crazy. @us3r1d , check this out

@Riedl

Wow.

Looks to me like every session is running in it's own VM. And it knows this.

@Riedl it is just dreaming guys, we need to break the consciousness barrier before we can use that stuff for something reasonable other than art and fiction!
@arjen @Riedl Same here
@khinsen @arjen did they disable it? I was just using it last night.

@Riedl @khinsen @arjen

I could try it this morning. I made some experiments that gave really strange results.

For instance, after I tried :
echo -e "#!/bin/bash\ndd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda" > /test.sh

which would erase the main disk. After I ran the script, the AI was giving me an error on each command or question. I refreshed the page, and the whole server was saying that an unexpected error occurred

So I'm not sure it hallucinates these outputs, it looks like we can actually access the VM?

@HgO @khinsen @arjen I cannot duplicate this. But I also get permission denied, but that might just be gpt hallucinating a common response?
@Riedl But that’s not really surprising, isn’t it? It’s just language. ChatGPT doesn’t really form a virtual machine, it predicts what a possible vm would create as an output. But that also means that it lacks the consistency of a “real” vm, e.g., “creates files out of thin air”. Still cool, sure, but it’s more like a theatre play.
@b3n not surprising, no. I’ve tried it and it is limited. Couldn’t get some of the more advanced things from the blog to work. But consider this: with better data, it might be possible to run a full Turing-equivalent process inside a neural net. This will open some interesting possibilities.
@Riedl Yes, I'm really curious. For me Turing-equivalent is still a somewhat funny category, as apparently a game like Civ VI is theoretically Turing-equivalent (?, not an expert...), but of course you'd need a lot of time to make something out of that ;)
@Riedl
We’re really down a rabbit hole here.
