Roger Penrose: "Consciousness must be beyond computable physics."

@jimdonegan why must it be?
@rabsinthe I don't know. You'd have to ask #Penrose. He's on the #Mysterian side of that debate, apparently. #Consciousness does seem to have an #irreducible #ontology in terms of 1st person experience but can nevertheless still be understood as having been caused by the brain. It is not clear why there is this dichotomy.
@jimdonegan irreducible how? It’s either on or off, but it’s not as if we aren’t aware of conscious animals (as in those who appear not to operate entirely on instinct) who’re less cognitively capable than humans, so it would follow that their consciousness would be a reflection of that capability.
@rabsinthe 'Irreducible ontology' just means cannot be explained by reference to more fundamental constituent things. The heart, for example, can be thought of as a pump and that fully explains what it does. Some people argue that the '#1stPersonOntology' of #consciousness is irreducible. Now, this may be true or false, but at the moment it is not explained. For myself, I can well imagine that it will be explained in the future and is therefore NOT #mysterian.
