Not gonna lie, this report is impressive, and every Mastodon instance should publish something like this every month. I have an account on mstdn.ca, and this is the kind of thing that would encourage me to move my main account from mastodon.social to mstdn.ca (although I would still support Eugen’s Patreon for his work on Mastodon, which benefits all instances). Staying put for now, though.

State of the Instance - November 2022

Cliquez ici pour le français I'll start off with this: It's been one hell of a month for Mastodon Canada. Introduction The instance grew from less than 60 users to what is now 24 500 users in the span of just two weeks. It went from an experiment to a

Mastodon Canada News
@ryanschultz this is fascinating, inspiring, and a little scary. I am very impressed how people step up. Thanks for sharing.
@ryanschultz
@d3cline again i realize that there might reasons why OpalStack can't provide as many details as non-prof `mstdn.ca` but whatever you can share will be appreciated.
@rik @ryanschultz Sorry for the slower reply I was taking a nap 😅 I sent it on the last thread. But to reply to the OP here.
We will be publishing info like this on our blog in different ways. Since we are a for profit web hosting company some of how we present this data will be different. But things like infrastructure and moderation policies in the public matter for sure. I will take note of this and see what I can do!

@ryanschultz

#adtech Facebook and Twitter boil down to really just being server farms with billboards. Gotta have infrastructure or they just don't operate. The #fediverse is incredible, but the beast will need to be fed, so to speak. The interface that Facebook or Twitter provide is really not much more than what Mastodon has, but they host the servers and they (ehem) do content moderation; what all of us want and expect. My prediction is that we will have a two-tiered, federated model where you can choose to pay to host or be hosted on a federated server, or you can join an ad driven server with your federated based avatar free of charge.

@ryanschultz @trendless have you seen this?

@leslore he's done an amazing job — with this write up and everything he describes therein 🌟🇨🇦

@ryanschultz

@trendless @ryanschultz imagine too the possibility that admins & moderators from 16,000 different instances share good ideas with each other and inspire one another to make this better than anyone right now can imagine

obviously there are no guarantees

but it's worth hoping for...

@ryanschultz I like how @chad is seeking legal council in setting up a Mastodon instance in order to be regionally & federally compliant.
Anyone who is managing an instance needs to seek legal council, & I wish there was some form of affordable legal option like Legal Shield (https://www.legalshield.com) who could help provide legal protection for instance admins without breaking the bank.
Maybe the @eff could set something up for a small monthly fee‽

@ryanschultz Super interesting - what it takes to host a Mastodon instance (mstdn.ca) , growth from double-digits to 5-digits user counts, community and technical management needs...

@ryanschultz My instance did something similar, which I too found impressive: https://hub.sfba.social/2022/12/02/transparency-report-november-2022/

My only problem if I were using mstdn.ca would be that I refuse to Paypal, but I would want to support my instance. But I imagine most folks are fine with Paypal.

Transparency Report (November 2022) – SFBA COMMUNITY HUB

@ryanschultz I think every month a #transparency #report of your #mastodon instance would be too much. But every now and then makes definitely sense. For many things…. E.g. Awareness that this costs money. ….
@ryanschultz Indeed an impressive report! Thumbs up to the process in selecting the @mstdn.ca team as well as the transparency. Much success to the Mastodon Canada instance! 👍🏾
