William Blake's Hecate. Hecate was an #AncientGreek goddess, a complex and ambivalent deity associated with crossroads, entranceways, magic, night, the moon, ghosts, graves, poisonous plants & healing herbs. The yew tree - a symbol of both life & death - was sacred to her. #WilliamBlake #gothic #mythology #folklore #Romanticism #art
@david_castleton I love yew trees.
@Sushke Some yew trees are very old - up to 1,000 years. I researched some for my book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Church-Curiosities-Strange-Objects-Bizarre/dp/1784424447/
@david_castleton I know of a couple that are ancient, though not as old as that. It would be interesting to know how to gauge their age. I'll have to do a google. 😉 Yews are such beautiful and important trees and we are lucky to have a few bordering our garden. The fact that they are considered sacred and the association as a symbol of both life and death is intriguing. They are a food source and home to insects and birds and badgers enjoy feasting on berries that drop to the floor...Brilliant!
@Sushke It's hard to age them because they become hollow in the centre as they get older.
@david_castleton I adore Greek mythology...and magic...and Romanticism. Thank you for the reminder.....from a not so secret gothic at heart. 🙂
@SpiritedDreamweaver I'm also a not-so-secret gothic at heart :)
