Observations after being on #Mastodon for about a month:

- At least so far, there is a culture of friendliness. It's quite alluring and it should become standard both online and offline.

- We were made aware of how much the Twitter algorithm emphasized user outrage in order to increase engagement and increase revenue. Our feed is fascinating and helpful here.

- In addition to responding to toots, people often submit poetry, songs and thoughtful questions. #Twitter was never so enjoyable.

@thetitanborn

I like the calm atmosphere of Mastodon and the wonderful photographs

@Annevelink_AD @thetitanborn agreed. There are alot of amazing photographers on #Mastadon and many of the pictures I've seen are incredible.
@thetitanborn I’m enjoying reading about interesting things that I never knew about and the civility
@thetitanborn I have the same feelings also. People here are very supportive and accepting, and you can definitely feel the lack of algorithm filtering on visibility. A wonderful place for a photographer to share photos and to see lots of other varied photos, not just the same few big accounts as on other platforms 💙
@thetitanborn Absolutely👏 it's lovely, and so interesting to look back on Twitter, after a few weeks absence, how much brighter and fresher this is, and such a pleasure to use.
@thetitanborn Did you see the movie "The Social Network?" As that made clear, along with testimony in Congress, social media has deliberately created controversy to pump up business. It's not an accident.
@thetitanborn I absolutely agree with you. Twitter is like chucking out time in the city centre. Mastodon is like a summer o morning sipping coffee on the piazza
@thetitanborn I agree. I’ve been on here less than a month and wonder why I didn’t start earlier. Still learning the platform, customs, etc. so I get the newbie feel as I learn. Made friends on Twitter and it was mainly good once upon a time, many have migrated here and hope more come over soon. Still kept my account open and have no plans to deactivate as of yet but other than a few likes and replies I don’t want to feed the Bird with muskrat at the helm. But this is home now.
@thetitanborn One of the most delightful things I’ve found is that accounts who are purely political activists on Twitter, are “real people” here. They don’t seem to be afraid to show the human side - cat lover, book enthusiast, photographer, etc. - so I feel I’m getting to know the person, too.
@schfinkes @thetitanborn same here. I’m just going around following everyone that shows a real, sensitive side. It’s much more peaceful for me here
@thetitanborn I agree entirely. It seems so much more sane. Mastodon is like having conversations in the town square. Twitter seems more like shouting by the side of a motorway.

@thetitanborn agree.
on the bird app, I had to "like" 20 positive topics (running, dogs, etc for me) to have my feed showing similar tweets.
When I "liked" just 1 tweet a bit more controversial, my feed is inundated by angry posts.

Moreover, the same angry posts show up in my 2 feeds (one personal and one professional) even if in my professional account I don't post/like anything controversial.

Anyway, I want to conclude on a positive note: I 💕 mastodon and I invited everyone I know to join.

@thetitanborn I fully agree. This is the beneficial effect of Mastodon being a decentralized open source platform, owned effectively by its users, as oposed to a comercial one, now in adition being owned by an ego-maniac.

@thetitanborn

Couldn't agree more. Great people here and I like the options to expand from just who you follow to the local timeline to the full Fediverse... And one thing I really noticed... people will just follow you here.. you don't have to "be someone"...

@tdwllms1 @thetitanborn On Twitter, my gang of “resisters” always followed each other. It was expected. We were in the “algorithm game,” everyone growing our accounts to be heard. Over here, I’m following people for no other reason than I like what they post. If I follow 1,000 and have 2 followers, I’m fine. It was hard work to get almost 20,000 on Twitter, and I’m finished with “working.”

@schfinkes @thetitanborn

Yes, I'm here to have fun and learn.. on twitter I was suspended 3x 😂 it's was more a war zone... no fun...

@thetitanborn it's relaxing. I'm not as tense or wound-up like I was. The talent on Mastodon is next level.
@thetitanborn could not of said it better myself :D
@thetitanborn I just joined and I really enjoy reading intelligent, thoughtful posts. I haven't quite figured everything out but I agree that the atmosphere is good here.
@thetitanborn I still rag on Trumpers ,but I don't think there are many here . #Bluewave
@thetitanborn the way my stress levels have decreased tenfold since deleting twitter. my fiance said my mood has been better too 😂

@thetitanborn as others have pointed out recently, friendliness is great as long as it isn't upheld by silencing people with negative perspectives to share (e.g. minorities, social justice advocates)

So where twitter was often artificially negative, we need to avoid making mastodon artificially positive.

#toxicpositivity

@thetitanborn And yet people are outraged to the point of fleeing the Twitter platform if the algorithm is changed. It's weird.

As far as friendliness, please show the the friendly Mastodon - most of my feed has been incredibly defensive and driven by pain points like Twitter, political angst, or economic pressures.

@thetitanborn Agree! I feel much calmer not using the #birdsite for #news
@thetitanborn Twitter at its best was full of interesting, funny and sometimes moving offerings. I think what I like about Mastodon is the care for it’s users….there is little of that over there. A few mins if scrolling and I am aware of being triggered in all kinds of ways….anger, grief, horror, it’s all there relentlessly bombarding us. This is just ahhhhh.
@thetitanborn Exactly my month impressions. So far it's a fun place!
@thetitanborn
Twitter used to be like this as well but that was a long time ago before it became commercial driven (and at a time when we actually had tweets delivered by SMS). I love the environment here as you've mentioned but we can't pretend that Twitter was founded as a soul sucking platform (I still use it with an app that's strictly timeline driven and it's not as bad as others experience) and that influence here can't change.
