Everyone knew Ye would reoffend & shouldn't get his Twitter account back. But the Star of David/swastika image that got him resuspended isn't ILLEGAL "incitement to violence." It's not even close. Despite his free speech ambitions, Musk chose to remove lawful-but-awful content
@ericgoldman @jtlg Following @mmasnick’s “speedrunning content moderation” path, perhaps? (Or just hypocrisy) https://www.techdirt.com/2022/11/02/hey-elon-let-me-help-you-speed-run-the-content-moderation-learning-curve/
Hey Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run The Content Moderation Learning Curve

It’s kind of a rite of passage for any new social media network. They show up, insist that they’re the “platform for free speech” without quite understanding what that actua…

@alpert @ericgoldman @jtlg @mmasnick As much as I would like to believe Elon is learning from his mistakes, we all know that Mr. “I’m the smartest person on the planet” has already decided everyone else is wrong about everything. Let’s just go with “hypocrisy” as a safe bet.
@ericgoldman you don't have to simp for Kanye, he's not rich anymore
@regphunt @ericgoldman I don't think he is; I think he's pointing out Elmo's hypocrisy.
@ericgoldman Musk seems to be making this all up as he goes.
@ericgoldman Ah, but it _is_ illegal. In Germany. And herein lies the issue of free speech which can get your ass shut down in international markets.

@growf @ericgoldman
Twitter had already solved this issue and has been able to filter content based on such rules for years.

Even people in the US have been able to set their location to Germany in order to have this kind of content hidden automatically.

@ericgoldman @growf @theWesterhazys that would have been nice to know. Not using twitter anymore so it’s a dead issue as far as I’m concerned.

@ericgoldman

Blergh. What does the law have to do with this? Leaving Germany aside, Twitter is a private platform and can ban whatever it wants. I'm not a lawyer and I have no idea what constitutes illegal incitement to violence such that allowing it on a platform is against the law, but there is no reason to think that this would be a useful dividing line for anyone.

If the point is "Musk is a hypocrite": yes, everyone knows.

@ericgoldman
I think it's pretty clear that Apartheid Elmo and his cadre of creepy acolytes are flying by the seat of their pants. There is no plan other than playing for the LOLZ.
@ericgoldman EM did this while welcoming the return of outspoken NeoNazi accts, some which were banned for years.
@ericgoldman The nazi symbol may be lawful in the USA, but not in other countries. The European Union has already complained about the lack of moderation and threatened to block Twitter.
