To ensure cars didn’t take back control of #Paris streets as the pandemic was “ending” (no, it hasn’t ended), like they have in so many cities, Mayor #AnneHidalgo made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed into seating for restaurants, people places and bike-lanes.

Leadership.

@BrentToderian yet tiny #PaloAlto caved and returned University avenue to the cars. It was such an amazing place while it was a car-free space.
@BrentToderian I wonder what they did for their equivalent of Blue Badge Holders who need to park close to the banks and other facilities they need access to. City of York Council have banned Blue Badge Holders from their city centre, firstly citing the covid two metre rule, then the need for businesses to use outside spaces for their recovery, now it's the terrorism threat in the lead up to Christmas. Totally against many Human Rights and Disability Rights legislation. #ReverseTheBan
@BrentToderian Santa Barbara (California) has kept their State Street closed to traffic, down near the beach, with cafe seating and pedestrian zones. I enjoy it.
@BrentToderian The worst pandemic in the world is the auto pandemic which needs to be crushed.
@BrentToderian I think this was one of the more positive things to come out of the pandemic. So many restaurants chose to continue outdoor dining even though it was no longer required.
@BrentToderian I’m so disappointed and frustrated with town near me that didn’t do this. Especially Carmel, CA all because of parking.
@BrentToderian
I love this! Would hope many more cities would follow.
@BrentToderian I remember @textfiles had the great idea to photo document these when they were decidedly temporary structures in places like NYC. Still worthy to document in Paris where they've become semi-permanent
@BrentToderian restaurants be like "Oh no, you can't take parking away for bike lanes! Oh, wait, it's for outdoor seating, great!"
@BrentToderian In the UK, as far as I can tell, everything went back to pre-pandemic behaviours. Opportunity lost.
@BrentToderian Yes please for Auckland NZ 🙂
@BrentToderian Meanwhile in #Otley in #Yorkshire the planters that were installed to provide a wider pavement for social distancing are being removed due to loud voices of people upset they have to use a car park rather than park on the road. Car parking also narrows the road causing more congestion but car remains king in Otley
@BrentToderian @rewarp well, the transition is hard. The area where I work is more congested, more dangerous for bikes and pedestrians. And randomly parked/abandoned electric scooters are a plague. That said, it’s amazing how many people have an opinion on the French and parisians when they *dont* live here :-)
