This by @marcoarment nicely conveys why I'm feeling good about using Mastodon, had no desire to sign up for Hive, Post or any of the other Twitter clones now popping up, and why Twitter also feels icky in comparison.
@marcoarment @tuckerjj exactly how I feel as well. Is it ideal? No. Will there be growing pains? Yes. But from electricity, telephone, railroads to internet, a thing changing from chaotic landscape of incompatible commercial implementations to an open standard was always a net good.
@tuckerjj @marcoarment I’m glad we’re going back to the roots of the internet. I was jealous of people older than me, who grew up with the web being almost completely free and open. Now I’m getting to experience something like it with Mastodon (and podcasts) gaining popularity, and it feels great! 😎
@tuckerjj @marcoarment I was definitely curious about checking out some of the other options despite feeling pretty confident I’d be landing on Mastodon. At the very least I was going to grab a user name. But then Hive shut down their servers due to security issues…. Choice made.
@tuckerjj @marcoarment @netzzwerk this is the turning point I was waiting for. 😊 #chaptermarks
@tuckerjj @marcoarment Was definitely not expecting such a quick pivot by the ATP crew but great to see they are throwing their collective weight and giving it a go!
@tuckerjj @marcoarment its hilarious to me watching the weekly evolution that the ATP crew has had about Mastodon. It seems like Marco finally “got it” this week.
@tuckerjj @marcoarment @vmstan Concur. An amazing evolution.
@WarnerCrocker @tuckerjj @marcoarment at least now I can stop screaming back at Overcast “OH COME ON!” over and over every Thursday afternoon.
@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment it's like the stages of grief but in reverse
@vktonik @tuckerjj @marcoarment he’ll be running social.atp.fm before long.
@vmstan @vktonik @tuckerjj @marcoarment there’s little Marco hates more than running servers 😆
@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment he really went from doom and gloom to “this is great” very quickly.
@yertle @vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment really glad they hopped on the train, especially since they where very skeptical of Mastidon really amounting to anything.
@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment they convinced me to to give it a shot tbh 🤷‍♂️
@vmstan @alexbourque @marcoarment @tuckerjj They convinced me as well, though this was my second attempt. A couple weeks ago I couldn’t get past the “which server” conundrum, but then figured out it doesn’t really matter.
@jasonthebruce @alexbourque @marcoarment @tuckerjj it matters, just not as much as you think.
@marcoarment @vmstan @alexbourque @tuckerjj to be fair, I don’t know enough about it yet to know what I think about how much it matters!
@alexbourque @vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment It’s true that there are tons of things here that need fixing or more polish. That’s the first thing people (including me) can focus on while kicking the tires. But once you realize that despite all the imperfections you can still have a good time participating here it sort of melts the negativity away. It also excites me to see something new grow again. Something not built around the advertising model especially!
@zwei @alexbourque @tuckerjj @marcoarment most of the flaws and imperfections that might be seen in first glance are actually design decisions or necessary architectural differences vs a centralized solution.
@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment to be fair, the barrier to “getting it” is probably much lower when you’re on the Ivory beta 😁
@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment listening to the episode this morning. All I could think was “That escalated quickly”

@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment Marco "had it" earlier, I think. He just didn't like how it was presented to him - app-wise (if i was hearing him right in the podcasts).

That has been many people's problems.

ps: Ivory could also fix people's main issue with #Mastodon - the onboarding and choosing of a server process - if it wanted to.

@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment Except he keeps rubbing that Ivory beta in our face. My current favorite app is Mammoth, even though it is not feature complete. Can’t wait for Ivory though.
@RickWilliams @tuckerjj @marcoarment Mammoth has a lot of promise. Mastoot is probably my favorite but it’s missing some features too.

@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment

UX/UI is everything, isn't it?

@usurper @tuckerjj @marcoarment it was more about the comments that anyone evaluating new social media options should look at it being open vs some VC funded mess.

Mastodon only has room to get better, but everyone else looks at it from it from how it can monetized. That’s the fundamental difference.

@vmstan @tuckerjj @marcoarment exactly my thoughts. Now how long till he switches to desktop Linux?
@tuckerjj @marcoarment This is a different tone to that which was adopted a week earlier. Which I applaud.
@canion @tuckerjj @marcoarment My only nitpick was their previous near-dead certainty that Mastodon wasn’t an option. That said, they admitted as much, and changed their opinion, which is all I can ask for. 😊
@tuckerjj @marcoarment I had this same though but hadn't articulated it as clearly.
@tuckerjj @marcoarment it's the same argument that took place in the Blogger/Tumblr vs Self-Hosted WordPress days; owning your content is the key to maintaining control. Twitter's 120-char limit was a trojan horse; we thought they were ephemeral, meaningless posts. The char limit increase+threads opened the door to long-form content & decimated blogging. Twitter took over as the de-facto town square where you HAVE yell above the din. Nuance & long-form are dead.
@tuckerjj @marcoarment It really is wonderfully refreshing around here. I've been watching my Twitter, almost in real time, get more and more full of stuff I don't care for and unsavory responses that make we want to mute/block. I see literally none of that here. Elon can turn Twitter into the next Parler/TruthSocial/Whatever -- its days in my life are clearly numbered, barring some massive turn around and probably his departure.

@tuckerjj @marcoarment
Seconded! I enjoyed that part of the discussion about being on Mastadon, and @marcoarment and @caseyliss describing the Ivory alpha got me excited about the potential for the new @tapbots client.

I was pretty much off Twitter since they screwed third-party developers, and I feel like Mastadon has some of that Twitter circa 2008 mojo I've missed since then. Admittedly, I may be jumping the gun, but I like what I am seeing and experiencing so far.

@tuckerjj @marcoarment It’s amazing to me how bad Twitter was, yet how important it is for news and culture. I don’t know if Mastodon will ever get to that level.
@tuckerjj Totally agree… I first came to Mastodon on the social instance but it didn’t really catch with me… I tried Hive and while I enjoyed a lot of the creative people I encountered the app itself just gave me the Twitter/Path had a baby feeling. After seeing @marcoarment mention hachyderm.io I migrated over and have really found a community that intrigues me even more so than Twitter did.
