Just in case you're wondering, the fight against authorizing the use of deadly force via robots by the SFPD isn't over yet. There is one vote left before the policy becomes effective. If you live in SF, you can use this Action Alert to tell your Supervisor to vote "no."

Let Them Know: San Francisco Shouldn’t Arm Robots

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Nov. 29 voted 8 to 3 to approve on first reading a policy that would formally authorize the San Francisco Police Department to deploy deadly force via remote-controlled robots. The majority fell down the rabbit hole of security theater: doing anything to...

@evacide Why am I reminded of the end of Robocop?
@evacide terminators?! I’ve seen this movie. No thanks
@evacide This whole thing of killer bots is insane!. I can't believe that SF would have even gone there.

@evacide

Once these monsters are used in SF, they'll be everywhere within the year.

@evacide my supe, Hillary Ronen, voted against it. I was happy to hear that.

@evacide They have 16 robots but only 12 are working. Their USE OF DEADLY FORCE involves putting a bomb on the robot, controlling it into a suspect's location and detonating it. That means they'll have fewer working bomb disposal Robots.

Who's gonna buy more of them? From where? GhostRobotics from SKorea allows armed robot dogs but they violate BostonRobotics' patents.

I don't think this has been thought through.

@evacide robots? r they saying effectively we don't need police to act like humans?
@evacide Fahrenheit 451 all over again...

@evacide I don't think that cities have the power to use deadly force like that.

We need to start a petition to outlaw it anywhere in California. SFPD is as corrupt as LAPD and LASD. Nothing good will come from it.

@evacide Have these people not seen Terminator?
@evacide Genuine question: could an AI possibly be *worse* at deciding when to use deadly force than the average American police already is?
@evacide So, is this where we start designing EMPs for civilians to use against police robots
@evacide I would vote no, but I do think the lousy media does a lousy job of getting all the details.
☝️If you live in SF or know someone who does, check the post above. (SFDP, robots, deadly force)
@evacide so glad to see this get voted down today in a reversal at the BoS.
