Every year#seals on our #northnorfolkcoast suffer from human interference….people wanting to take selfies & scaring away mothers, dogs out of control, chasing seals into the sea or even worse attacking, maiming & killing…the list goes on.
Despite a long running campaign by #FriendsofHorseySeals & #BDMLR as well as several high profile stories in the media, people persist in demonstrating careless behaviour around #wildlife
Today #RSPCA #EastWinch shared the fate of one seal pup….

Heartbreaking to see this. The campaign to educate people to respect wildlife is endless.

@SueASmith @NorfolkBea Unfortunately it's one that is losing ground to irresponsible dog owners who believe they have a right to walk their animals where and how they choose. This photo is just one example of what I see happening every week - people making conscious decisions to put wildlife at risk. There needs to be consequences for these actions.

I agree. I’ve often lived near farmland and livestock and believed no matter how well trained a dog is the responsible thing is to keep a dog on a lead.
@mikeholley @SueASmith @NorfolkBea cameras and prosecution seems the only answer
@NatalieHopkins Random sounds of shotguns and a fake dead dog hung up alongside the path would do it...guaranteed.
@Judeet88 a bit drastic but that’d work too. I find that hitting their pockets and embarrassing them to others works better.
@NatalieHopkins Too expensive and time-consuming to do fines. Scare them shitless is instant and doggy will be back on the lead immediately.
@mikeholley @SueASmith @NorfolkBea I was walking with a friend in Yorkshire somewhere and we saw a sign on a gate saying stray dogs would be shot...with a photo of a sheep completely ravaged by a dog off it's lead.

I totally agree. I walk my lurcher on the lead across many footpaths going through farmland.
It is a matter of understanding that a dog's urge to hunt is very strong.
Being on a lead also means we get close to wildlife including hares.
I regularly remind other dog walkers of the importance of keeping livestock and wildlife safe.
Sadly some people are rude and ignorant.

I think you’re right. Some people forget or don’t understand that their pets still have instincts. I had a mini schnauzer who I always keep on a lead not simply for the safety of life stock but also her safety. A schnauzer’s instinct is to look into the distance for prey and ignore things in their periphery which if they’re off the lead puts them at risk of being hit by vehicles.
