The beauty of #mastodon? Sociologists I haven‘t heard about, with really interesting research start following me, and I am tempted to join so many interesting discussions. Whilr on #twitter, well, I mostly advertise stuff or do word jokes. It feels like professionalization… #sociodon #sociology
@AlexMitterle let’s start a discussion on competition in science and He here!
@immersender @AlexMitterle I guess it would be worthwhile to discuss about what a ‚fair competition‘ might be. Here it sounds like a pure euphemism
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Come on, work your method magic. What do we learn here about Biden's (social media person's) conception of fair competition?
@immersender @kosmuetzky it goes in th schumpeterian/ Callonian direction: fair competition is if you are so innovative you have singularized your product in such a way that there are no competitors for the time being (and you make so much money you can decently pay your employees). #multiplecompetition
@immersender @kosmuetzky I however have some questions about the „heart“ of capitalism…
@AlexMitterle @kosmuetzky As I read it, competition is what keeps capitalism dynamic, what drives the ongoing process of improvement. It is not just the core but the engine.
@immersender @AlexMitterle Good points. On my mind also the set up or organization of competition as in this popular cartoon.
@immersender @AlexMitterle not sure if I am able to add photos here
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Yes. But that is obviously not the idea of fairness evoked in the tweet.
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Well, I can tell you how I read the tweet and you can tell me why I'm wrong.
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Look at the second sentence. Perhaps I don't get "win your business" correctly. And I know, you are already looking for more exciting post-triadic shores.
But, I understand that the reader is addressed as Tertius. And competition is fair as long as "corporations" are courting Tertius by improving their performances. So it is not about what is fair for one competitor relative to another. The question is what is fair for Tertius.
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Obviously, the situation in the cartoon may undermine performance competition. But the absence of equity is in itself not the problem.
@immersender @kosmuetzky yeah, that‘s the point (your business) I don‘t fully understand in the tweet. In which context was it tweeted?
@kosmuetzky @AlexMitterle Ah, good point. Looked at it as an isolated tweet. But it isn't. Part of a series of tweets on the occasion of "Small Business Saturday", apparently.
@immersender @AlexMitterle would be interested to read the whole thing
