This is not a joke: San Francisco Police want to arm robots for use against the public. You can help stop them. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/red-alert-sfpd-want-power-kill-robots
Red Alert: The SFPD Want the Power to Kill with Robots

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will vote soon on a policy that would allow the San Francisco Police Department to use deadly force by arming its many robots. This is a spectacularly dangerous idea and EFF’s stance is clear: police should not arm robots.TAKE ACTIONEMAIL YOUR SUPERVISOR: don'...

@eff What the actual fuck, Let's keep them in The Division 2 videogame alright?
@eff
I saw this just a few days ago and was wondering if the ol' USA was advancing towards robocop status anytime soon, or if we were already there. Looks like I have my answer!

Maybe it is just the thinking of a simpleton (me), but it seems that if a robot can be armed with a lethal weapon, for the purpose of “neutralizing” a “bad actor” without putting police officer’s lives at risk, couldn’t that same robot be outfitted with a less than lethal capability, ensuring that the “bad actor” is at least given something that resembles a fair trial before being executed?

I know this is probably a really complex issue that has lots of moving parts and can’t be solved easily…. It just seems that giving cops access to terminator robots while they already have a very poor track record of making split-second judgement calls is a really bad idea, and it’s hard to imagine anyone outside of the police unions supporting this.

@eff As a non-SF resident how do I help stop them?
@eff This is seriously dystopian. They wrote a statement that said the robots "will not be used outside of..." and then listed everything the police do.
@eff have they NEVER watched a science fiction movie? We ALL know where this leads.
@eff didn't this happen in black mirror

@eff if I see one of these robots (armed or not) I'm throwing it in a river.
@eff when I see things like this it is no wonder American Public refuse to give up arms
@eff most avg moment in sf
@eff LITERALLY just watched an episode of #DoctorWho where they did just that with Daleks.

It passed, I'm so pissed off. I wonder what the Assembly Bill said.

"The vote is mandated under a California Assembly Bill that was passed in May which requires police departments across the state to approve the use of such equipment by their governing bodies. In San Francisco, the governing body is the Board of Supervisors."
