Funny how centrists never threaten to go left if fascists aren’t civil.
@helpmeskeletor If you consent, I would share my objections. If not, totally understand. I hear where you're coming from but there are certain points I take issue with.
@escarpment @helpmeskeletor making a polite request and pre-apology for the most heinous shit you ever heard someone say nicely #JustCentristThings

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor I had hypothesized that one of the reasons I tend to get blocked here was because of the perceived non-consensuality of me weighing in with a slightly different opinion. So now, I ask for consent before offering my slightly different opinion.

Do you ever have different opinions from other people? Perhaps you like strawberry ice cream when someone else likes chocolate?

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor To what extent do you believe people should be free to have different opinions? I suppose your Overton window could be very narrow where you view most political and philosophical opinions beyond acceptability?

@escarpment @helpmeskeletor we're not talking about strawberry icecream you useless twat we're talking about whether i should be killed in the street

so no, your opinion on that is pretty fucking irrelevant

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor For the record, I don't think you should be killed in the street. That's why I'm not a fascist. Is there any political issue where you think multiple opinions are possible?

@escarpment @helpmeskeletor not the ones we're talking about, and you fucking know which ones we were talking about.

"im just asking questions" no-one is fooled. piss off

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor For what it's worth, I am just asking questions, and I think it's a tragedy that the far-right has turned asking questions into a bad thing. In fact, they've turned a lot of basic or neutral things bad: free speech, asking questions. I don't think we win by ceding those things to them.

@escarpment @helpmeskeletor if you don't understand that questions can be damaging on their own, contain assumptions, and create problems, then you're a fucking idiot. claiming not to be a fash but you're literally helping them then having a sook when you're called out for it

see also the classic: "when did you stop beating your wife?" shut up. fuck off. be better

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor Questions can do that, yes. But they can also be useful. Like, "do automobiles hurt the environment?" "Is thalidomide safe for pregnant women?" What if no one ever asked those questions because people with dissenting opinions are fascists?

@escarpment @helpmeskeletor literally no-one is talking about those things. no-one is saying the concept of a question is bad, but you knew that. because that would be an insane thing.

instead you're just making life easier for people who want me dead. "just asking questions".
very cool of you, hey could you fucking quit it tho? fucking sealion

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor I didn't know that. It seemed like you were indicating the concept of a question is bad by insinuating "just asking questions" is a bad thing. I don't want you dead and I do not want to make life easier for people who want you dead. It sounds like consent has been denied for offering my clarifications, so I will happily withhold them and carry on my day.

@escarpment @helpmeskeletor no-one gives a shit how much you think we should listen to fascists. you are literally the problem OP complained about

i mean this from the bottom of my heart: eat shit

@chhopsky @helpmeskeletor I don't think you should listen to fascists. So the answer is 0. 0 listening to fascists.

@escarpment @chhopsky @helpmeskeletor I would like to remind you that this is all in response to a comment about how centrists often align themselves with fascism while blaming the left, but never seem to do the opposite, and had nothing to do with "differing opinions" (a well-known fascist dog whistle).

I would like to remind you of this, then block you.

@parchmentscroll @chhopsky @helpmeskeletor Fair enough. I only point out that "differing opinions" being a fascist dog whistle is a very dangerous place to be indeed. Because differing opinions, notwithstanding fascists, are healthy and good. Like "I think there should be protected bike lanes."
@escarpment @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor really incredible job here pretending that the fascists are gaining political power for bike lanes
@chhopsky @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor I don't think that. I am just saying having a bike lane is a political opinion over which two non-fascists could differ, neither wanting the other dead. Two democrats could argue over that. Two socialists could argue about it.
@escarpment @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor literally why the fuck are you talking about bike lanes. what is wrong with you
@chhopsky @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor I explained why: as an example of a political debate inside the Overton window where multiple opinions and questions are permissible and neither side wants the other one dead. I suppose you could argue the anti-bike lane person is a fascist, though I think that would be hyperbole.
@escarpment @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor who gives a shit. you know that's not what we're talking about. and you're helping them by pretending any of the bullshit you tried to inject was relevant

@chhopsky @escarpment @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor.

Hey Mr Green Square, can you just shut the fuck up? Like. Unironically. Shut the fuck up.

@yassie_j @chhopsky @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor I understand. I will. Please don't assume my gender with "Mr." and I don't think my anonymity (my green square profile picture) is relevant to my ideas or a reason to dismiss my ideas.

@escarpment @yassie_j @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor your ideas are getting dismissed because they help fascists

you're either evil or stupid and i'm not sticking around to find out which

@chhopsky @yassie_j @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor I don't want to help fascists. I am against fascism. I'm sorry I'm too stupid for you. I'm just trying to minimize collateral damage in the fight against fascism.

@escarpment @yassie_j @parchmentscroll @helpmeskeletor yeah dude you're attempting to impede the fight against fascism while being shocked that you get accused of impeding the fight against fascism

brilliant work, really

@escarpment Hell, already sounds like a great reason to block your postings… as passive aggressive postings give me the winds.
@helpmeskeletor
Sane centrists went left long ago.

@helpmeskeletor It's not really centrism if all you do is complain about one side.

I see that way too often. Makes it hard to believe they are arguing in good faith.

@helpmeskeletor I went left because the right went fascist
@helpmeskeletor well it's interests are capitalists but some centrists actually do go left and that's also bad because they're still centrists and centrism is bad even if it pretends to be left
@helpmeskeletor funny how sweeping generalisations are never right.
@helpmeskeletor There is more to politics than a single theme of left and right. Liberalism encompasses both individualism and a caring society.
@LD_Phil @helpmeskeletor Here in Belgium we have the socialist party on the left and the liberal party on the right.
@helpmeskeletor I think it depends on what KIND of centrist. The 'no sides' centrists probably do think this way, because they abhor conflict even when justified. 'Status quo' centrists, too, who mainly fear rapid change. (Which is actually canonical conservatisim, as opposed to political 'conservatism', which mostly isn't conservative at all.) But plenty of centrists are merely skeptical of the left (as well as the right), yet eager to fight fascism. Fascism is a threat to everyone.
@helpmeskeletor and that is the key to understanding much of the politics of the last 100 years
@helpmeskeletor I did 😅 The horrors of Brexit and Boris Johnson pushed me *way* to the left of where I used to be (or maybe I stayed still and the political landscape shifted right around me...)
@helpmeskeletor it just happened in brazils last election. Center right sided with the left because the extreme right was not civil. (I don’t like to use fascist here because fascism is a very specific flavor of extreme right. We had our share of both fascism in the 1930s and 40s, and military junta extreme right in the 1960s and 70s, and they are quite different, Bolsonaro is the second kind).
@helpmeskeletor “Funny how “centrists” never threaten to go left if fascists aren’t civil.” There, FIFY.
@helpmeskeletor That’s simply false. This is how it works in Poland where centrists (finally) started talking like left wing. You can also see it in opinion polls that centrist voters became much more pro-choice and LGBT+ friendly in recent years.

@helpmeskeletor I used to call myself a centrist. Even joined Unite America and received the Centrist Manifesto. But I found their messaging ineffective and not practical considering the perilous political times we face in American and our democracy is under threat. I vote independently and strategically, not by party alone. A lot of us have to do that now in Georgia.

If you see any self proclaimed "centrist" that are Crypto bros or talk about "free speech" they are almost always far right.

@helpmeskeletor Centrists veer hard right if you make them remotely uncomfortable or question their authority.
@helpmeskeletor wow. My first block on MASTADON.
