The arguments for remaining on twitter to “fight” remind me of the gambling adage that the house always wins. “Fighting” there is like gambling and thinking you’ll eventually beat the house. But even if you win $10,000 at the slot machine it’s because it’s in the casino’s bigger interests to give you $10,000.

A viral post from a progressive helps prop up an increasingly reactionary company. @jeffjarvis

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis the way to fight for twitter, if such a thing matters to one, is off Twitter.
@Chanders @Jelaniya Hard to fight for the people on Twitter to join someplace where they are not yet.
@Chanders @Jelaniya And btw, Chris, this is why I wrote this post and why I'm holding a class on the 5th on moving to Mastodon. https://medium.com/whither-news/on-joining-mastodon-d539eed5e41a
On Joining Mastodon - Whither news? - Medium

An academic friend asked for help joining Mastodon. I wrote a detailed email in response that I thought it might be useful to others. I’m also going to teach a master class in Mastodon at my school…

Whither news?
@jeffjarvis @Chanders @Jelaniya This is excellent even for those of use who have only arrived in the past few weeks.
@jeffjarvis @Chanders @Jelaniya This is fantastic! I've been looking for something like this to share with people who are nervous about joining or are confused, specifically with the 2nd part, but have only found multiple articles/blogs that only cover the 1st part.
@jeffjarvis class? open to the public? Online? where can I get more info?

@jeffjarvis @Chanders @Jelaniya

Consider shortening your intro to a bare bones “how to get on.” Seems most people stop at picking a server. Get them past that obstacle before smothering them with details.

@suzstephens jeesh. Then stop reading at that point. Or write your own. This is what bugs me about Mastodon: the scolding.
@suzstephens That was a hurdle for me. I tried to join a couple of servers and it wasn’t possible at that time. I saw a tweet about another one, someone I follow on the birdsite who started their own server, then that worked out.

@natasha514b

Natasha, if you know anyone having the same problem, suggest that they choose these options on the Join Mastodon server page:

Legal structure: all
Sign-up speed: Instant
Region: All regions
Topic: All topics OR General

This will give a list of servers that should all be accepting new users.

As you’ve probably heard, once they get in somewhere, they explore what’s available and change later.

@suzstephens I prefer to recommend my own server, or another one that some of those that I follow are part of.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis also as the adult child of compulsive gamblers, this is spot on

Notice you always hear about the gamblers' wins. You don't hear how much they spent / lost to get that win.

It's insidious.

From GA: "The idea that somehow, some day, we will control our gambling is the great obsession of every compulsive gambler. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of prison, insanity or death."

@Jelaniya It's not the house I'm fighting against, it's the relationships I'm fighting for. I want to reignite some of those relationships here. Yes, when Trump was elected, I wanted to move to Canada. But I didn't. I stayed and used what tools I had at hand.
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya Of course that analogy doesn’t quite work because you, as an American citizen, have a genuine stake in staying in America. It’s your country. In contrast to Twitter, which is someone else’s website where you’re allowed some space at the whim of a (rather odd) tycoon.
@gabrielquotes @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya Those are my feelings. I had fun there. Elmo bought it, it's his, he is making a mess out of it, he can then shove it.

@gabrielquotes @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya guys.. it's not the infrastructure, it's the community. using, living under a cracked infrastructure. it's the community (which maybe not so easy to reconstruct?) which people have a stake in.

who's country this is anymore? i don't know. doesnt really feel like mine. i'm just lurking!

@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya I’m curious, do you have any successes you can point to because you stayed in America to fight the good fight?
@Timmy @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya couldn’t have voted for a successor without staying … but, of course, commercial platforms are rarely democracies.
@Timmy @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya The 2020 election and the recent 2022 midterms might be an indication that not all is lost.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis @Timmy
I moved from the US to Canada in 2005 (family), and there’s a lot that needs to be done in both countries, so crossing the border is no solution

Canada treats indigenous people very badly, disability rights here are less protected than the States #MAiDinCanada etc

And Canada’s healthcare system is in serious danger of being dismantled by austerity and privatization

So think about moving if you want, but the work needs doing everywhere

@Timmy @Jelaniya @jeffjarvis
The US allows dual citizenship now, so I get to vote in and complain about both countries

@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya

Keep your options open. Looks like there's a growing need for planting antifacist attitudes in the general population up here, too. Graft, greed, corruption and fascism are pretty much interchangeable.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis It's important to recognize when something is a lost cause. Twitter users are staying to fight for something that they never actually owned or controled, even if they (we) felt ownership over it.
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Twitter isn't even fighting. its trading sound-bites
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis the fight is the value add. you and your values are the entertainment. passion and discourse is the product.
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis What constitutes “fighting” for you is “eyeballs,” “engagement,” and thus greater value of the product for Musk. That simple.
@jud @Jelaniya @jeffjarvis exactly … probably the only way to effectively fight is to leave. Staying combined with just about anything else allows you to be counted as a user for marketers to pay Elon to access. “Fighting” makes you an active user to entice other active users = platform more valuable.
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis I think twitter will survive his nonsense. But right now, I just feel icky posting there, since my tweets would technically be his property. I will still lurk since it's almost a utility for news/public affairs stuff; that's what makes this whole debacle tragic

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis #Birdsite is not now - nor was it ever - a "level playing field". That was an illusion. The #algorithm dictated everything. No one will be staying to fight a person or even a group. They won't be fighting an idea they hate. They'll be fighting an algorithm that's owned them from the start.

It's the picture definition of a lost cause.

Long live the #fediverse!

@Alan Exactly. It was gamed from the very first.
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya I think the time to fight would’ve been when there was a big campaign to buy Twitter and make it a user cooperative a few years ago. It got pretty far—a presentation to the shareholders—but was rejected. Anything short of collective ownership wouldn’t be materially meaningful as a demand.
@schooldaves @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya of course, if the Muskrat wrecks things enough, the whole platform might have to be sold off for pennies on the dollar, in which case a collective user buy out (perhaps leading to a conversion to Activity Pub and re-federation with this) could be more possible than ever
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Deleted my Twitter account yesterday. Couldn’t stand the toxicity any longer. It’s even worse there since anyone with a conscience fled to Mastodon

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis
100%.

Twitter has been a fun cesspool for me to wade into recreationally, and I recognize that's about the best case scenario, as there are plenty of others who get harassed and threatened for being there.

Fight for Twitter? That place has no value apart from our presence and eyeballs. It's worth nothing without people wanting to be there.

And the idiot in charge clearly doesn't understand that on any level.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis I'm sraying on Twitter till it loses Victoria Brownworth (@VABVOX), Propane Jane (@docrockTX) and .@MonaEltahawy
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis yes. It’s like feeding a beast with opportunities to attack you. Many posts I see on here, about that organization, read like scorned lovers who can’t stop talking about the bad relationship and wonder why they can’t grow in their new relationships. Let’s build better
@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis I'm with Jeff Jarvis on this and have been toggling back and forth on and off Twitter. I still get my weather on Twitter. Musk gains not a penny from me still using Twitter, au contraire. Now I'm thinking about the recent updates on Bird scooters: every time someone rides a Bird scooter, Bird is now losing money. Their tradable shares had dropped to $0.24. When cheap or free capital props up your scooter or microblog, it's one thing. But those freebies, in the absence of income, like me tweeting, are costly to the owner now that capital is starting to cost a bit more. They make not a penny off me, au contraire - I'm costly: penny by penny of having to maintain the software propping up my tweets, with zero revenue.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis

Twitter must fail, spectacularly, to help improve things. It will be a haven for the worst of humanity, the neo nazis and alt right trolls will flock to it. Decent people must leave when they are ready and able. If they stay it will look successful and give a larger platform to the worst people.

Still hard to walk away from a space you've been in and found a tribe in.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis that’s why I left. It’s not a fight. The purchase is final.

@prodygy @Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Richard, that's it, exactly!

"The purchase is final."

Twitter ain't a democracy. It never was, but now that's obvious.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Musk has shown how he actually feels about open speech and debate when he started wholesale banning of people for mocking him, or pointing to his mistakes. He's a spoiled child, and the only thing to do is walk away from his tantrum.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis

Too true. I'd also add that coming on Mastodon I feel like we are all co creators and owners of this space.

This isn't just a place to escape to but a place where we can build something new that belongs to us.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis I agree. It's a lost cause under the current management and policies, and the house always wins. Twitter isn't a country we can defend by repelling invaders. It's, ultimately, just a web site owned by an increasingly hostile billionaire. The only way to win is to move elsewhere.

I still visit, but just to find friends to tell them where I've moved.

@Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Fighting the changes at Twitter by defiantly posting there seems roughly like fighting climate change by moving to a house on the edge of the ocean.
@mattblaze @Jelaniya @jeffjarvis Apparently the owner of the place just made an "88" post. That is a house I am not walking into again unless someone worth saving needs me to physically pull them out of it and the metaphor fails at that point because unlike a burning house that is not how the online world works.

@mattblaze @Jelaniya That's not what I'm doing, Matt. I'm urging people I respect there -- with respect -- to come here in hopes they will be treated well (no guarantees). I wrote a guide to help folks come over and I"m teaching a class next week to do likewise. Also, it is my job to study social media.

Whither news?
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya I wasn't criticizing you, and perhaps I missed the context to the post I replied to. I'm just agreeing that the stance (which I hear some people take) that we should "fight to take back Twitter" is misguided and doomed.
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya My apologies if that came across as directed at you - it really wasn't.
@mattblaze @Jelaniya Thanks, Matt. Much appreciated. I was getting a bit besieged for saying that I'm still trying to convince folks to come here.
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya Oh, keep that up, by all means!
@jeffjarvis @Jelaniya @mattblaze is there actually a “fight to take back Twitter?” It feels as though most left as refugees looking for safety, not freedom fighters staging a counterattack. There doesn’t appear to be an agreed upon objective or strategy. Just gleeful (sometimes mournful) ridicule at the schadenfreud.

@btanderson @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya I don't know if there's any group actually doing it, but I still hear people talking about it. The framing is as if a really awful president had taken power there, and they're choosing to stay and "fight" rather than flee and become a refugee in a different country.

As apt as analogies between Musk and Trump may be, Twitter isn't actually a country that can be "fought for" on those terms.

@mattblaze @btanderson @jeffjarvis @Jelaniya It's rapidly returning to the twt of 2015, only w/out the benefit of blue checkmarks or data safety & w/ awful new algorithms. Ppl thought they were fighting for truth & democracy, but later learned we were just railing against hordes of rw bots & Russian trolls. A lot of ppl acted like they had slain a dragon when they successfully made someone block them. It's all taking on new life.
@Jelaniya @mattblaze @jeffjarvis I am defiantly posting there with the specific objective of getting banned or suspended for defiantly posting the Quiet Part Out Loud™
@mattblaze @Jelaniya @jeffjarvis I'm hoping resisting Twitter users will finally understand that a decentralised system, not run by a business with it's own priorities, is the only sustainable way forward. It's pointless to try to help save a centralised mad dog, when it will turn round and bite you.
@Jelaniya ... And how many others lose everything so you can win that $10,000?
