@schooldaves This has been making me crazy this entire election season! Like, there are plenty of reasons not to like Helen as a candidate, but the fact is that she is THE public schools candidate, as anybody who's been in that fight well knows. And even without that, there's still Fair Workweek and eviction diversion! That's not nothing!
People think that Helen Gym is "all talk and no action," but that's carefully crafted bullshit. Here's me in In These Times: https://inthesetimes.com/article/helen-gym-bernie-sanders-aoc-philadelphia-mayor
Helen Gym Has Won Big for Working People

Critics claim that Helen Gym has no track record of tangible accomplishments. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

A student in my finance class pointed out how unfair it is that when a bank fails, the Fed steps in and big banks come to the rescue, but school districts that are having a hard time don’t exist to the Fed and don’t get any help from the well-to-do districts around them. So true.
I keep thinking about a school finance officer who told me that he prefers to the municipal bond market because it's more reliable than public programs: control of state power passes unpredictably between generous and pro-austerity groups, doing and undoing financing programs.
Turns out the municipal bond market is highly inefficient, and I think this is at the heart of the toxic schools issue in Philadelphia. https://buttondown.email/davidibacker/archive/does-this-seem-right/

HEYYY my homie @schooldaves yelling it loud and proud from Philadelphia to Chicago: PAUL VALLAS SUCKS. Don't mess this up, Chicago! https://inthesetimes.com/article/paul-vallas-brandon-johnson-public-education-mayor
“He Sold Our Schools off to the Highest Bidder”

A look inside Paul Vallas' history of harming public education and a sampling of the shock doctrine politics, anti-union postures, neoliberal policies and budgetary schemes he brought to school districts around the country—and world—and the havoc they helped create.

God damn it. Private equity saw childcare provision as a $60 billion market, so it's getting involved and it'll make the already rickety system more unstable and expensive.

Child care costs rising with more private equity firm investments
