Not like we had an instance culture before, it was just like five of us around a burning barrel in a half-collapsed warehouse like some 80s movie, but now that one is developing it's not really something I enjoy

A big part of not being an asshole #OnHere is knowing who you want to be a good neighbor to and what sort of behavior runs contrary to that.
That’s why I hate all the Journo dork instances, they want to be taken seriously and accepted by everyone but apparently some tenant of their “professional integrity” is being chill about transphobia if it’s published by a news outlet.
There are different types of reasons that instances are defederated. Some are just pumping raw sewage into the fedi or doing targeted harassment. Some have rules that don’t comport with another instances rules in a way that makes them feel unsafe. Sometimes it’s a good ol fashioned internet beef.
When the first two are communicated through the hashtag, it’s pretty easy to determine if that is a course of action for your instance to follow. When the latter is, it is also pretty easy to spot
